IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.
Specitication forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,908, dated January 19, 1875; application filed September 26, 1874.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE Hor/IER CLARK, of Lockport, county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain Improve ment-s in Reapers, of which the following is a speci tication This invention is an improvement on my patent ot May 2, 1871, No. 11i,408. The object oi' the invention is to improve the working of the fan in connection with the cutter, and consists in providing a double and adjustable fan, operated and arranged as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view; Fig. 2 a perspective, showing the cutters and the fans as in operation.
A A represent the cutters, revolved on the cutter-shaft B by the cog-wheel a underneath. C C are two double loose fans revolving on loose sleeves b on horizontal arms D D, by means of beveled cog-gears c c attached to the inner ends of sleeves b b, and which mesh into a segmental beveled gear, d, on a loose sleeve, f, surrounding the cutter-shaft. This sleeve is kept in any position7 raised at any height desired, by means ot' set-screw or its equivalent g. The horizontal arms D D are also attached to a collar, h, adjusted or held by a set-screw, so that it can be raised or lowered in position with the rest. Above this is a segmental fan guide or disk, E, also set on a collar for adjustment up or down. The
object of the fan-guide E is to carry and hold the fans upright while the knives are cutting, and the break in the cogs, on the sleeve f, is to remit the movement of the fan until the revolution of the knives again throws it in gear with the segment d. For this purpose the fans on their innervends are provided with a flat projecting piece or lug, c c, which engage on the fan-guide E and hold the fans upright until released by the break in the disk. The fans are made with double leaves, with the ends curved, as shown in Fig.2, and have a double rotary movement, one in a vertical di rection, and the other horizontally, being carried around the cuttershaft. This gives a much greater air-pressure on the grain, and
also holding it upright until delivered on the table F their double construction also giving abetter delivery on the table. The cutters work either way.
I claim- I. The double fans C C', on sleeves b b, and arms D D, with the cogs o c, the segmental cogs d, fan-guide E, and fan-lugs c c, in co1nbnation with the cutter-shaft B and cutters A A, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The movable collar It, carrying the fansupporting arms D D, in combination with the movable sleeve f and segment d, for adjusting the fans higher or lower, as hereinbefore set forth.
