1 c.'w. CELL FASTENING DEVICE Filed June 25. 1923 gwuwn oz Patented June 15, 192E.
' UNITED STATES CHARLES W. CELL, 0F RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA.
- FASTENING DEVICE.
Application flied June 25, 1923. Serial No. 647,736.
This invention relates to fastening devices, and more particularly to means for fastening two abutting members to each other.
An object of the invention is to provide a fastener for the side section of stake racks, wagon bodies, tanks, gates and. the like in which two members arranged in alignment with each other are to be joined or connected, said fastener consisting of a rod pivotally connected to one section and a member pivotally mounted on the other section, said pivotally mounted member having an eccentric slot to receive the end of said rod, whereby said sections are drawn together when the pivoted member is turned to a locked position.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this type which may be readily closed and released.
A further object is the provision of a fastener of simple construction and relatively few parts.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown one embodiment of the invention.
In this showing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of two members, such as the side sections of the stake rack showing the fastener applied,
Figure 2 is a plan view,
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view on line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view on line 4-4 of Figure 1, and,
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of the pivotally mounted member.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates one section of a stake rack and 2 an adjacent section, the two sections being adapted to be secured to each other. A rod 3 is pivotally mounted in one of said sections. As shown, the rod is provided with an offset end 4, passing through an opening in the section 1. The inner end of the rod is adapted to receive a nut 5, and this nut is arranged in a recess 6 on the inner side of the section 1 so as to be flush with the surface. A. wear plate 7 may be arranged beneath the rod. As shown, the rod is inclined outwardly, as at 8, so that its free end 9 is slightly spaced from the faces of the sections. This end isprovided with an offset portion 10 as shown.
A member 11 is pivotally mounted on the other section of the stake rack. As shown, this member is provided with an opening forms a lock to retain them in of the invention or the adapted to receive a screw or pin 12, forming a pivot. The pivotally mounted member is provided with a slot or recess 13 parallel to its outer face and is further provided with a transverse slot 14, extending from the rear face to the slot 13.
In operation, with the parts in dotted line position shown in Figures 1 of the drawings, and the slot 14 extending upwardly, the rod 3 is moved downwardly with the offset end of the rod in the slot 13 and the body portion in the slot 14. When the offset end engages the bottom of the slot 14, further downward movement is prevented. The pivoted member isthen turned downwardly to the full line position, swinging the slot 14 to a substantially horizontal po sition as shown in Figure 5 of the drawings, and exerting a pull on the rod 3, which draws the members 1 and 2 together and such position. To disengage the members 1 and 2, the pivotally mounted member is moved to the dotted line position and the rod 3 lifted from the slot.
While I have illustrated the invention as a fastener for the sides of stake racks, it is apparent that it may be employed in any construction where a pair of members are arranged in alinement with each other, with the ends of the members abutting as a fasten-er to secure such members to each other.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a prefered example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit scope of the suboined claims.
I claim:
1. A stake rack fastener comprising a member pivotally connected at one end to one section of the stake rack, the other end of said member having a portion projecting beyond the end of the section parallel to the stake rack, said projecting portion being provided with an end portion bent at right angles thereto, and a locking member pivotally connected to the adjacent section of the rack, said locking member being provided with a pair of spaced arms parallel to the stake rack providing therebetween a longitudinal slot in the same Jlane as the roec'ting end of said pivots member and into n ion the pro ecting end of said pivoted member is adapted to be inserted, one of said arms being provided with a transverse open ended slot adapted to removably receive the bent end of said pivoted member, said projecting end being adapted to swing from unlocked to locked position across a line between the pivots of said neinbers, and being adapted to engage against the bottom of said longitudinal slot to prevent movement of said locking nieinber beyond normal locked position.
2. A stake rack fastener comprising a member pivotally connected at one end to one section of a stake rack, said member projecting beyond the end of the *eetion parallel to the stake rack and being provided with an end portion bent at right angles to theprojeetion portion and extending inwardlytoward the stake reek, a locking ineinher arranged againstthe adjacent pertion of the stake reek, said locking member being norlnally vertical and having a normally horizontal upper face portion adapted to he arranged beneath and to Contact with the projecting portion oi said pivoted member, said locking member being further provided with apair of upstanding arins arranged parallel to the stake rack, an d upon opposite sides of said horizontal upper face portion and between which the projecting portion of the pivoted member is adapted to be inserted, one of said arms contacting with the stake rack and having an open ended transverse slot adapted to receive the bent end said pivoted member, said locking member 1.
being further provided beneath said arms with a norniall depending handle, and a pivot pin passing through the arm arranged against the stake rack and extending there into, said pivot pin being arranged above the projecting portion of said pivoted member when said projecting portion is in contact with the horizontal iaeo portion of said locking member.
In testimony whereof, I aliix in signature.
CHARLES VJ. CELL.
