Application filed September This invention relates to pumps and has for its principal object to provide a new and improved construction of a portable or wheeled power driven pump in which the main body portion of the pump is constructed preferably of a single casting forming a main frame work to which the sup porting wheels and the pump driving mechanism-are secured thereby producing a compact. inexpensive structure of great strength and simplicity.
This and other objects will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains from the following more detailed description and by reference to the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a portable power driven pump embodying my invert,- tion and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
In the drawings the numeral 10 indicates the main body portion of the pump, which as shown. preferably consists of a casting of any suitable metal, bored out to provide a pump cylinder 11. in which the piston 12 is slidably mounted. The cylinder 11 communicates with a water chamber 13 formed in the front part of casting 10. to the flanged outlets 14. 15 and 16, of which are suitably connected the inlet pipe 17, the air chamber 18 and the hand hole cover 19. A one way ball valve 20 is provided between the inlet pipe 17' and the water chamber 13 and a similar valve 21 is provided between said water chamber and the air chamber. These valves are adapted to seat by gravity upon the valve seats 22 constructed of any suitable semi-resilient material which is clamped between the opposed faces of the connected flanges of the parts and serves not only as a seat for the valves,'but also as a gasket to prevent leakage between the flanges.
The rear part of the casting 10 is formed into a U shaped web. the vertical side walls 23 of which are joined along the major portion of their length by the bottom wall 24 and at the ends thereof by the connectirr web 25. Bearings 26, preferably provided with the bushings 27. are drilled or otherwise formed in the side walls 23 adjacent to said connecting web 25 for rotatably receiving a countershaft 28. Said countershaft has secured to one end thereof a pulley 29 driven by the belt 30, which is trained over a pulley 31 secured to the shaft of an electric 13, 1924. Serial No. 737,498.
motor 32. The other end of said countershaft has secured thereto a spur pinion 33, meshing with a spur gear 34, secured to a crankshaft 35. The crank shaft 35 is rotatably mounted in split bearings 36, the upper halves of which are secured as by the bolts 37 to the vertical wall 23.
The electric motor 32 is mounted upon a platform 38 which is pivotally mounted upon a pivot bolt passing through the apertured bosses 39 formed integral with the main casting 10; adjusting screws 40 being provided for moving said platform upon its pivotal mounting to regulate the tension of the belt 30.
One end of a piston rod 41 is detachably I secured to the crank shaft 35 by means of the split bearing 42. which permits the piston rod and piston 12. to which the other end of the piston rod is pivotally secured, to be removed from the cylinder without necessitating the removal of the crank shaft.
A bracket 43 of an inverted U shape has its central portion bolted to the bottom of the casting 16, the extremities of said bracket being bolted directly to the square wheel axle 44 by means of the bolts 45 which pass through suitable apertures in the horizontally extending ends 46 of said brackets. The bolts 45 also serve to connect the handles 47 to the wheel axle, said handles preferably being constructed of angle iron. the vertically extending web of which is cut away adjacent to the axle. The handles converge inwardly and upwardly from the axle to cause their vertical sides to lie flat against the side walls 23 of the casting 10 to which they are secured as by means of the bolts 48. The outer or free ends of the handles 47 project to a convenient distance from the pump casting and are provided with brackets 49 in which the handle grip 50 is secured. A pair of supporting legs 51 are secured to the bottom of the casting 10 and cooperate with the wheels 52 to hold the pump in a substantially horizontal position for pumping. Bracing rods 53 extend from the lower end of said supporting legs 51 and have their lower and up r ends respectively, bolted to said legs an the strengthening webs 54 formed integral with and extending along the bottom of the casting 10.
If it is desired to use the pump as a permanently installed device the axle 44, wheels 52 and handles 47 may be readily removed b unscrewing the bolts and 48, after whic the ends 46 of the bracket 43 may be bolted rdirectly to any suitable supporting block.
It will be noted that the casting 10 forms a main frame or body rtion in which is formed the water cham r and pump cyl inder and that all of the other parts of the device, namely the air chamber, the motor 42, the countershaft, the crank shaft, and the auxiliary frame parts 43, 47, 51 and 52, are
directly bolted to and carried by said casting. It will thus be seen. that with a construction such as disclosed herein I am enabled to secure a finished device of great strength and rigidity.
Furthermore, because the greatest part of the machine work recipired is performed upon a single casting, t e production costs are reduced to a minimum, and as the casting 10 carries all of the moving parts of the device,
the proper positioning and alignment of such parts iseasily secured and maintained.
In addition the asembling of the device is also rendered very simple.
' It will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the con struction and arrangementof the parts with-- out departing from the principles or spirit of my invention asset orth 1n the claims hereunto appended.

countershaft journalled in said casting, geara main casting having a therein, and a water chaming connecting said countershaft and crank shaft, a motor and drivin connections therefrom to said countersha means comprising floor wheels for supporting said pump,- and handles for trundhng said pump upon said floor wheels, all of the above recited shaft journalled in said casting, gearing connecting said countershaft and crank shaft, means for driving said crankshaft, a piston rod having one end thereof ivotally secured to said piston and a separa 1e split bearin connecting said iston rod directly to said crank shaft and t e distance from said crank shaft to the adjacent end of said cylinder being slightly greater than the length of said piston for permitting removal of said cylinder and piston without necessitating removal of said crank shaft.
4. A portable wheeled pump comprising a main casting havin a cylinder formed therein, a piston in said cylinder, drivin mechanism carried entirely by said casting for reciprocating said piston, and an inverted V-shaBed bracket, having a pair of horizonta y extending apertured end portions, secured to said casting, the apertured end portions of saidbracket" serving to secure said pump to a fixed support or to detachably connect it to a wheel carrying axle 5.
