This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in railroad track constructions and has as one of its objects the provision of an improved tie supporter for preventing sinking of the track such as is experienced where the ground is somewhat soft.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of an improved device of the character described which is former. from bendable metal to permit its manufacture in a single stamping operation to thus make it feasible to equip railroad track 0on structions therewith without materially adding to the cost thereof.
This invention has as a further object the provision of an improved device of the character described which will also function to maintain the ties of the tracks in their proper spaced relation.
lVith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the hereindisclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:

In Letters Patent No. 1,163,627 granted. Robert L. Cochran, December 7, 1915, is illustrated. a device for spacing the ties of a railroad track where the same passes over a bridge. This device functions satisfactorily to properly space the ties, but is open to the objection that the frequent vibrations of the track causes its fastening members to become detached and furthermore the device is an expensive casting which makes it inadvisable to equip track constructions therewith.

In the accompanying drawing 1 have illustrated a very simple device which is inexpensive to manufacture, which will not only serve to maintain the ties in spaced relation irrespective of whether-it runs along the ground or over a bridge, but which will protect the track against sinking into the ground and in the drawing the numeral 5 designates the in any conventional manner such as by the spikes 7 and my improved device comprises a member 8 which is secured to the under sides of the ties in the manner illustrated.
My improved device is preferably struck or bent from a single sheet of material of proper gauge and has a medially recessed portion 9 of a width equal to the desired space between the adjacent ties and having lateral flange portions 10 which overlie the bottoms of the adjacent ties. The flange portions '10 are preferably formed with upstruck barbs or prongs 11 which bite into the ties and secure the device in position, although any other means of fastening may be provided, orthe device may be placed in position without any securement to the ties, being maintained in position by the ground 12 and the usual gravel 13 which is packed about the ties. As will be readily evident, my improved device affords ample protection against sinking of the track into the ground; the raised portion 9 of which projects into the space between the adjacent ties providing the necessary additional bearing surface.
An additional advantage of my improved device, as will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which an invention of this character appertains, is that the upkeep of a track equipped therewith is materially re duced, inasmuch as it is not necessary to be continuously working the ballast under the ties to support the same and consequently the life of the ties is materially increased.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a track construction including spaced ties and rails secured thereto, means connecting the undersides of adjacent ties to pro tect the same against sinking into the ground and consisting of a member formed from bendable material and havinga part adapted to extend upward between the ties, lateral A i s v attaching flair ,.-g the undersides ties upon which the rails 6 aresecured of the ties and. barbs struck upwardly 'from the attaching flanges and adapted to be embedded in the ties to secure the member in position.
2. In a track construction including spaced ties and rails secured thereto, means connecting the under sides of adjacent ties to protect the same against sinking into the ground and consisting of a member having 10 a medial part adapted to extend upward between adjacent ties and provided with Yertical side walls adapted to engage the sides of the adjacent ties, lateral attaching flanges engaging the under sides of the ties-aim means for attaching the lateral flanges to the ties.
