DRYING .AND ENAMELNG OVEN.

This invention relates to that type of drying and enameling ovens of the indirectly heated type in which the heating units are located at the sides of the oven chamber, leaving the central portion thereof free for the reception of `the article vundergoing treatment; and more vparticularly to the type of ovens in which each indirect heating unit comprises a lower horizontal combustion trunk and superimposed headers and intermediate tubular connections from which the heat is radiated'into the interior of the oven.
ln 'the described type of ovens, and more especially in the primary operation of driving ofl'1 the volatile portion of the enamel or like coating composition, explosion bodies of gas collect in a concentrated condition in the aforesaid headers, and when accidentally ignited cause an explosion and ruptures in the walls of said headers, and in some instances causing an explosion of the combustible gaseous contents of the oven chamber and a wreckage of the oven walls. Accordingly the object of the present improvenient is To provide a simple and effective combination of parts and features whereby a free outlet or passage to the exterior of the oven chamber is provided for the products of the above mentioned explosions with the headings, withlittle or no damage to the walls of the headers, and no liability of the communication of an ignition flame to any explosive gaseous matter which may be in the main oven chamber, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.

ln the drawings, the invention is shown as applied to a drying and enameling oven of the ordinary rectangular form, comprising the usual insulated side walls 1, top wall or roof 2, end wall 3 and front wall 4 formed with the usual entry or doorway. The oven chamber of such structure is provided with the usual pair opposed heating units, each of which units in the construe.- tion shown comprise a lower horizontal trunk 5, the chamber of which contains the heating means, either electrical or gaseous, and al series of vertical mains or headers 6 extending up from the trunk 5 and connected together by tubular members 7, with said parts coacting to perform the iidirect heating function of the oven chamber. In the particular form of heating units above described the central header 6 of the plurality of headers in each unit will extend up through the top wall 2 of the oven and have communication with the usual outlet or uptake stack 8 of the oven.
In that the specific construction of indirect heating units just described Vis old in the art, it is within the scope of this invention to substitute therefor other equally old and generally used forms of indirect heating units.
The material feature of the invention in connection with an indirect heating means of the type above described, consists in forming the headers 6, or like. equivalent members, of the indirect heating units aforesaid, with portions or extensions 6 which pass outside the oven chamber, and providing said portions with readily blowout provisions, such as an opening in each of saidportions 6 and anassociated hinged cap 9 held in place by gravity.
llVhile in the preferred form of the invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the portions or extensions 6 of the headers 6, extend directly through the oven roof 2, so that any of the above mentioned explosions in the headers 6 may have a short and direct discharge into the oven containing room of the factory. It is however within the scope of the invention to extend the portion 6 of the headers 6 through the side walls l of the oven, as illustrated in Figs. 7 8 and 9,-and also to extend said portions 6 of the headers 6 up through the top wall 2 of the oven and up through the roof of the building as illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6.
Having thus fully described my invention what I Claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a drying` and enaineling Aoven of the. type described, the combination of an oven stiuetnre` indirect heating means arranged in the oven chamber, and having heat radiating headers, said headers having portions extending outside the oven chainber, and blow-out ineans arranged in said portions adapted to aiiord reiiet in an explosion in said headers;

In a drying and enaineling oven of the type deserihed, the combination of an oven structure, indirect heating ineans arranged. in the oven ehainher, and having heat radiating headers, said headers having portions extending outside the ovenv chamber, and blow-ont means arranged in said portions adaptedV to afford relief in an explosion in said headers, said blowoutv ineans comprising zin-opening in the. portion of the header outside the oven chamber, and av hinged gravity cap associated with said open-ing.
