UNITED STATES 1,588,940 PATENT OFFICE.
Y HENRY CAVE, F HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOB To THE FULLER BRUSH COH- PANIT, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, 'A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
DENTAL PLATE BRUSH;
Application iled January 80, 1925. Serial No. 5,760.
My invention relates to brushes that are especiall formed for cleaning dental plates, and an o ject of my invention, among others,
is the production of a brush of this class so One form of brush 'embodying my invention and in the construction aud use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others. may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a brush embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same.
Figure 3 is a perspective View of a dental plate.
Figures 4 and 5 are illustrative views showing the manner of use of the brush to clean such dental plate.
Figures 6 to 8 illustrate the manner of using the device.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 6 indicates a handle that may be of any suitable shape and material, and to which handle a brush 7 is secured. This brush comprises a loop 8 at its outer end, in the preferred forni of construction this loop being substantially round with an opening 9 of substantial dimensions through its center. Between this circular loop and the handlel there is a straight portion 10 and the loop 8 is offset from a plane parallel therewith and extending through the axis of the handle, a portion 11 arranged at an oblique angle to said plane connecting said straight portion and circular loop, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.
In the preferred form of construction this brush is of what is known as the twisted Wire type, that is the bristles are secured to a core formed of twisted wire.
Important features of my improved brush include the circular loop, the obliquely disposed portion 11 and the straight portion 10, irrespective of how these parts are constructed or formed, but in a preferred arrangement. and as shown herein, said brush is composed of a brush member comprising a core with bristles secured thereto that is folded at its lengthwise center into the circular loop 8, the. parts extending from said loop being arranged parallel to each other and close together along the obliquely arranged part 11 and the strai ht portion 10.
It will be note that the structure as herein illustrated and described as peculiarly adapted to the cleaning of dental plates. In this operation the circular looped portion 8 may be readily applied to the walls of the gum groove 12 of a dental plate 13, and the upper surface of the arch 14 will be surrounded by the loop 8 so that by swinging the brush back and forth with the arch in the opening in the brush as a pivot the entire upper surface of the plate includin the gum groove may be easily and quickly oleane and as illustrated in Figures 4 and of the drawin s, from which it will be seen that the brus lits nicely within the gum groove on the upper surface of the plate and when moved with a pivotal action, the handle bein swung from side to side, the lit of the brus to the upper surface of the plate will be maintained, and this will result in a. very effective and thorough cleaning of the plate, the oblique portion l1 cooperating in producing the lit and also in the cleaning operation, enabling the latter to be performed without obstruction from other parts of the brush structure.
The circular loop in cooperation with they oblique ortion 11 also readily adapts itself to the c eaning of the under surface of the plate including the arch and tongue groove 15, the brush being tipped from side to side and swung in varlous directions to cause it to make contact with the entire under surface of the plate. In this operation it will be seen that the oblique part 11 and the loop causes the brush to nicely fit the arch, including the tongue groove, and as shown in Figure 6 of the drawings, whereby a very effective and thorough cleaning of this surface of the plate with little effort on the part of the operator may be accomplished.
The straight portion and the oblique portion 11 may be employed to clean the edges of the plate to which the teeth are secured, this by a movement of the brush crosswise of the teeth, lengthwise thereof or in any other direction, and as illustrated in Figures 7 and 8, from which it will be seen that the oblique portion l1 in connection with the straight portion 10 causes the brush to nicely fit the groove of the plate on which the teeth are disposed and the teeth may be, therefore, very readily cleaned by moving the brush with a rubbing action around the edge of the teeth and plate. By using the straight part in the manner illustrated in Figure 8 and effecting a vertical movement the crevices between the teeth and at the base thereof where they enter the plate may be very thoroughly cleaned with little trouble.
While there is herein shown a'nd described the preferred embodiment of the present inventlon, it is, nevertheless to be understood that minor changes lnay be made therein without departing fromthe spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. Y
I claim- `1. In a dental plate bush, a twisted bristle carrying core formed with a substantially closed vcircular loop portion, the end portions of the bristle carrying core being arranged substantially paral el, the bristles carried by the end portions being disposed in contacting relation and a handle attached to the termini of the end portions.
2. ln a dental plate brush, a bristle carrying core formed with a substantially closed circular loop portion, the end ortions of the core being arranged substantlally parallel in contacting relations, both sides of the core being obliquely disposed between the loop and end portions to present the loop and end portions in different parallel planes.
HENRY CAVE.
