Application illed December 4, 1924. Serial No. V753,904.l
My invention relates to protective covers, and more articularly to a protective cover 'for bath tu s.
Formerly, before built-in bath vtubs were used, it was customary to put in the bath vide a protective covering for the tubs after the majority of the other work in the bath roomhadbeen completed. Since built-in bath tubs have come into use, however, it has become necessary to install the y bath tub before the partitions-are in place orthe plasteri'ng -or tile-setting is done in the bath room, as the-bath tub is inset into the wall adjacent thereto. It has been found that when a bath tub is installed before this work is done, it is very frequently damaged bythe dropping of tools into the same. or other hea objects, or by the shoes of persons standlng therein when working ond the walls orv other portions of the bath room adjacent thereto. It has accordingly been found very desirable to provide some means y of protecting the bath tub after it has been installed, to prevent damage thereto.
.It is the purpose of my invention to prourposes referred to above, comprising a portion that is adapted to coverthe entire bath tub including the rim thereof, and to provide means for securing the same in position so that the covering cannot be easily removed. The covering is preferably of Cai such stren h that if a mechanic desires to stand ont e same to work above the bath tub. the covering will support his weight without damage thereto. A
It is a further urpose of the invention to provide means or holding the protective covering member in position on a bath tub that will securely hold the covering in position, anddo so without damaging-the tub.
As bath tubs vary somewhat in size, it is desirable to provide .adjustable means engaging the inner face of the tub to prevent transverse movement of the covering relative to the tub', and to further provide means 'for holding the coverinfrom upward movement relatlve to the tu xdflhe covering preferably rests on the top e ho ding the same from movement 'upwardly relative to the tub referably, comprises clamping means engaging the tub and means detachably engageable with said. clamping vtiling or other walll covering that is at 4body portion of the tub, and the means for means mounted on the protective covering member. vThe said means preferably comprises clamping members having upward extensions provided with openings that are adapted to receive bolt-like members that are mounted for axial movement into and out of engagement with the openings in the clamping members.
The'clamping means engaging with the inner face of the tub preferably comprises eccentrically-mounted, curved members that are made of a material that will not injure the enamel on the inner face of the bath tub. Vhen the work in the .bath room is completed, ythecover member, with the bolt-like members and the eccentrically-mounted clamping means, is removed, while the Vclamps remain in position on the edge of the tub, these being so proportioned and vso mounted that the same are imbedded in the plastering or mounted in the back of, the
r0- vided adjacent the edge of the tub, an accordingly are hidden from view. New
clamping members must be used for this purpose for each tub that is provided with the protective covering.
fit these bath tubs,an extension member is provided that is detachably engageable with the main body portion of the protective covering, and which may be of such a size as to properly tit the covering. to a tub of anyhlengtn that it is desired to cover there- Wit Other objects and advantages'of the inj so Some bat-h tubs are longer than others, and .in order to provide for a covering that will vention will appear as the description of the accompanying drawings proceeds.: However, I desire to have it distinctly understood that I do lnot intend to limit myself n to the exact details shown orvdescribed,but that I intend tof include as part of my invention all such obvious. changes and modifications of parts as would occur t/o a person skilled in this art and asy would fall within the scope of the claims.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a bath tub showing my improved covering in position there- 4 on, the adjoining Wall portions being shown in horizontal section;
Fig. 2 is a vertical, sectional view of the moI bath tub and covering member,lsh'owing the bath tub installed;

' Fig. 7 isa fragmentary vertical, sectional i view of a bath tub and my im roved covering member, showing a. modi ed construction for holdin7 the covering fromvverticall movement relative to the tub;
Fig. 8 is a similar view showing a further modification of the means for holding the covering from vertical movement relative to the tub;
' Fig. 9 is a fragmentary plan'view of one end of my protective covering, showing an 'extension member connected therewith;
Fig. 10 is a vertical, sectional view there-` of; and i Fig. 11 is a diagrammatic horizontal, sectional view of a bath room showing a bath tub positioned in the corner thereof,` and the arrangement of securin devices for the protective covering for suc an installation.
Referrin provided 'with a laterally extending flange portion 11 around the top ed e thereof, said ange portion being imbedde y in the plastering 12 providedon the walls 13-when the installation is completed. In using my prot tective covering, the bath tub 10 is installed before the plastering has been applied to the walls, and the protective covering`14 is putv in place thereon. The protective covering,
' as will be clear from Fig. 1,v does not extend is ordinarily expose short, laterally extending flanges 17 that are adapted to rest on the upper surface of the edge portion of the tub 10 or on the latern ally extending flanges 11 thereof. Said clamping members are further provided .with a lower laterally extending flange portion 18 that is screw-threaded to receive the in detail to the drawings, in- Figs. 1 an 2 is shown a bath tub 10`that is screw-threaded clampin member 19 that is adapted to be adjusted' y turning the same in the member 18 to clamp the flange 17 tightly against the top edgeof thetub 10 on the flange portions l11 thereof. The
clamping members 16 are lfurther provided provide means vfor removing the bolt-like members 22 from the openings 21, the same are provided with notches 26 providing shoulders 27 with which a tool such as a chisel may-be engaged to move the bolt-like l members 22 to the right in Fig. 3, out ofen- 90 gagement with the members 20.
The covering member 14 is preferably made of a material made up of a plurality of plies 28 of Wood, which are covered on the opposite faces thereof with plies 29 of metal. The metallic plies 29 are preferably bent around the corners or edges of the plies 28, as indicated at 30, to protect the edges o'f the plies 28 with the metallic covering, said bent-over portions 30 being held in position in any lde sired'manner.
A plurality of adjustable holding members are providedl for holding the cover member 14 from shifting transversely of the bath tub, said members being indicated by the numeral 31 and being preferably curved both eccentrically to the pivot member 32 and to conform tothe curvature 33 of the tub 10 between the body portion thereof and the flange portion 11,- thus providing a compound curved rtion 34 on the member 31 engaging witllmthecurved portion 33 vof the tub. The pivot member 32 is preferably made in the form of a bolt-like member, and it will be seen that when the bolt like member 32' is turned so as to loosen the members 31 that the same can be turned freely to any desired position to adjust the same so that the curved faces 34 thereof will be in snug engagement with the curved faces 33 of the tub 10 on opposite sides thereof. rlhen the members 32 can be drawn up, tightening the members 31 and holding the same against turning on their pivots. Thus the covering 14 is held firmly from transverse movement relative to the tub 10, and asthe members 31 are preferably made of wood or similar material that can be smoothly finished so as to cause no damage .to the finish o'f-the 'innerface of the bath tub, it will be seen that the clamping means,
` ,while holding the covering member from' 'movement .transversely of thetub, will .in no wa vdamage thetub.. r the'arrangement shown in Figs. ,l and 2, it will ,-bevseen that the bracket members 23 and boltlike members 22 are mounted on along those edges of the coverl4 adjacent thewalls 13 It will be clear from opposite ends ofthe tu'b. When a'bath tub 1s p vacedin a corner, as shown i'n Fig. 11, an does not extend from one wallto another, the covering member 14 is preferably rounded off at'the end thereof to conform to the rounded end of the tn b the 'holding means 31fbeing located as in the previously described form, but the bolt-like members l22 and the brackets 23 are preferably7 located that lie Figa-1 to 3, inclusive, that due to the 'shortness of the ange 17 and the thinness of the member 20, the plastering 12 or other .-Well covering material will extend over the j rim'or flange portion 11 of the tub to such anextent as to completely cover the exposed portions of the clamping members 16, which .can,..accordingly be leftin position without v anynobjection thereto.
Fig. 7 the 'protective cover member 14 is sho'wn as being provided with a different form of securing means for holding the same from -movement away from' .the tub 10, said means comprising a rod member 35 having a hook end 36 a apted to engage under the cross bar 37 provided in the drain 38 of the tub, said member 35 being provided. A with athreaded end adapted to screw- .threadedly receive the nut :3Q-and a washer 37 being -placed between said `nut 36 tand Instead of using' the clamping member shown in Fig 7 the cover member v14 may be. rovided with a hook rod 39 having a hoo -shaped end 40 that enters the overflow drain opening 4 1 in the tub 10, and which is provided with a nut 42 to screw-threadedly engage therewith, and with a washer 43 bearing against the cover 14.
While the'cover membed described above will lit theordinary standard-'size bat-h tubs,
some bath tubs are made of .greater len hr than the' standard size, and in order t -it the cover member to such tubs the extension shown in Figs. 9 and 10 is preferably proi ,l vided. Said extension eomprises'a body porsame thickness as said cover member.
tion 44 that is made preferably of the same material as the cover member 14 and ofS the aid extension 44 is preferably provided with a -pair of flanges 45 which are preferably in the form of metallic strips bolted or otherwise secured by the securing members 46 to the edge portion of the member 44 adjoining the end edge ofthe member 14 to which said member 44 is to be a plied. The edge portion 47 ofthe member 14 preferably fits snugly between the flanges 45, and the exing members 16 comprisin a bracket member 48 corresponding in al respects to the bracket member 23, and-a bolt-like 'mem-I ber 29 corresponding in all respects to the bolt-like member 22, and operattension 44 preferably provided `with means l jthat is adapted to co-operate with `the clamping in thesame way lto hold thecover 'i j member from movement upward relatively to the bath tub. It will be evident that the extension 44, due to the provision of the flanges 45, will not be capable 'of vertical `movement relative to the member 14, and
