Description

' UNITED S'rn'rns PATENT Orrxon.
JOHN YATES AND ALVAH P. YATES, or nooxronn, ILLINoIs.
IMPROVEMENT IN ST OVE-POLISHES.
Specification formirg part of Letters Patent No. 158,878, dated January 19, 1875; application filed November 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that we, JOHN YATES and AL- VAH I. YATES, of Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented a new and. useful Compound for Polishing Stoves or other Metals; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same.
In the manufacture of our improved stovepolish we use plumbago. benzine, asphaltum, gasoline, and liquor of iron, in about the followingproportions, viz.: Plumbago, one pound benzine, one gallon; asphaltum, one-half pint; gasoline, one-half pint, and liquor of iron, one gill. We take the plumbago, place it in a dish, and add benzine, and mix them well; then add onehalf pint of asphaltum, and, while stirring, add one-half pint of gasoline and one gill of the liquor of iron. When thoroughly mixed the compound is ready to be put in cans for use. The compound can be mixed either Warm or cold; but by warming it the process of mixing the same is facilitated.
It will be seen that two of the ingredients, viz., benzine and gasoline, are similar in their nature; consequently, the gasoline maybe dispensed with, a similar quantity of benzine being substituted therefor, this making a good stove-polish for ordinary purposes buta much finer polish can be made by using both ingredients in the proportions named.
The polish is applied to the stove by a brush or otherwise, and polished in the ordinary manner by rubbing with a brush.
We are aware that paints have been made in which plumbago and mineral oils were used, and this we do not claim; but
What weclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A stove-polish composed of the ingredients herein specified, and in the proportions substantially as set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 18th day of November, 1874. 1
JOHN YATES.
