Description

UNITED; 'STATES PATENT OEEIO.
ADDISON SMALL, OE PORTLAND, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRT-BOSOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,867., dated January 19, 1875 application filed A April 23, 1874. l
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADDISON SMALL, OfPortland, vin the county of Cumberland and State ot' Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Shirt-Bosoms; and I do hereby declare that thefollowingis afull, clear, and exact description th ereof. which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this Specification.
The drawing shows end views, illustrating the manner in which the pieces are folded.
My invention relates to certain improvements in shirt-bosoms, and is applicable either to what are called Whole bosoms, orthose Where the shirt is fastened at the back, or to open bosoms. v
The particular object of my invention is one which has been sought in certain inventions already made upon this subject, viz., to prevent the bosom breaking outbetween and under the plaits of the same.
With this View I make my improved shirtbosom of four pieces of cloth, A, B, C, and D. These are folded into the forms -to be hereinafter described. The piece A is folded as shown in Fig. 2, and when so folded is composed of the parts a b c, the part a passing under the fold d, which latter foldis formed on the piece B, and constitutes the center plait of the bosom. The part c constitutes one part of the bosom-front. The part e of the piece B forms a back piece to one-half of the bosom, thus making it a donble-linen bosom in all its parts.
The part C forms one of the side plaits upon the opposite side by means of the fold f g.
This has also the piece h, which laps under the center plait, d, and thus, with the back piece, i, makes the bosom a double-linen bosom under the plaits or folds of the other half. The piece l) extends on the back of the bosom sufliciently far to overlap the part a of the piece A, the part e of the piece B, however, passing between them, as illustrated in Fig. 1. 'lhe line of stitching is indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. l.
It is obvious that when the bosom is to be made open in front the stitching indicated by the dotted linexis onlymade through the fold indicated in Fig. 3 by the letter d, a separate stitching being made for the parts or folds that lie beneath the center plait.
I do not claim a shirt-bosom which consists, simpl y, in overlayingthe cotton shirt-front with two pieces of linen folded into a bosom. My
' double back is linen, not cotton; and the bosom is composed of four pieces. It differs from the patent to Solomon Libby, No. 111,690, in the manner of folding, material, and .mode of construction.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The double-linen Shirt-bosom,composed of the parts A B C D, folded and applied, relatively to each other, as herein described, the same being stitched in the manner set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
v ADDISON SMALL.
