FIREMANS LADDER.

Specification of Letters Patent N o. 415,883, dated October 14, 1856.

To all whom t may concern.'

Be it known that I, DOMENICO GIAMBAs- TIANI, of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a Firemans Ladder, of which the following is a specification.

This remans ladder consists of sections a, Z9, c, cl, e which can readily be put togetherI so as to form a double ladder of great steadiness` and strength. The two lowest frames e, e are connected by braces f, j which are hinged together and to the frames at t, u and s. By means of these hinged braces the lowest frames can be folded together when not in use. They can be unfolded easily and rapidly and when unfolded form the foundation for the upper structure consisting of the rest of the sectional frames. When unfolded the hooks g serve to steady the braces. The second set of frames al, d is placed over the frames e, e so that the ends p, 0 of the ladder steps fit into the notches m, n. at the ends of the outer uprights of the ladder. The central uprights lv, fw are similarly connected to each other by tongues and grooves g, r.

In a similar way the frames c, o b, b and a, a (the latter hinged at the top) are set one upon the other and connected with each other exactly as frame d, d with frame e, e as above described. Hooks Z serve to insure the steadiness of the whole structure.

A small crane :n can be attached to the top of the ladder in such a way that it can be swung in a horizontal plane in order to remove weighty articles from the burning building and let them down. The crane can easily be lifted out of the hooks on which it swings, when it is to be used no further.

By reason of the ease with which the substructure eA e can be unfolded and set up in combination with the peculiar manner of attaching the upper sections, this firemens ladder can be built up with more rapidity and by a less number of persons than any other remens ladder in use.

The combination of the folding foundation frame e, e with the detachable single ladder sections a a, b b, o c', Z d', as above described and for the purpose herein stated.
