Description

A. L. BUTERWORTH.
Shoe-Knives.
No. 158,830. Patented Jan. 19,1875.
WITNESSES V VENTOR V, Attorneys PATENT OFFICE.
ABEL L. BUTERWORTH, OF FRANKLIN, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOE-KNIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,830, dated January 19, 1875 application filed July 25, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ABEL L. BUTERWORTH, of Franklin, in the county of Merrimack and State of ,N ew Hampshire, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Shoe-Knives;
. and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, refer-. ence being had to the annexed drawings makin g a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a plan view of my shoeknife. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
This invention has relation to shoemakers knives; and it consists in constructing the handle of the knife hollow, and employing a blade which is endwise adjustable in the handle by means of a screw-shank and a thumb-nut, whereby more or less of the cutting portion of the blade can be exposed beyond the end of the ferrule for trimming the edges of soles, and for other purposes.
In the annexed drawings, A designates the handle of the knife, and B the blade, which may be of the usual well-known shape. The
handle A is hollow, and Plovided with a ferrule, a, which may be made of steel, and which serves as a shoulder while using the blade in trimming a sho'e-sole. The blade B has a screw-threaded shank, 12, formed on it, which is received in the handle, and which has applied on it a milled thumb-nut, G. The nut O is applied in a hole, 2, made through the handle, so that it can be turned by the thumb and finger for adjusting the knife.
It Will be seen from the above description that the knife-blade is endwise adjustable, and that any desired length of blade can be exposed beyond the end of the ferrule a. What, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the threaded knifeshank b, of the recessed handle A, having the transverse slot 2, the ferrule-guard a at the mouth of the bladerecess, and the rotating operating-nut O, seated in said slot, and engaging with said ihreaded knife-shank, to adjust the protrusion of the blade, substan tially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ABEL L. BUTEnWoRTH.
