' in service, and a general improvement in the details of construction and the arrangethe art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in ment and combination of parts, to be here inafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, in which 2- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the penholder with a pen point held therein.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary front elevation. tion.
Figure 3 is a vertical section line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detail section line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the clamping member, and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the spring.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I have shown the device as comprising a suitable elongated handle 10 of any desired or preferred material. upon one end of which is secured a ferrule 11 formed preferably of sheet metal and necessarily of tubular form. At one side this ferrule is cut away along an incline as indicated at 12 and at an opposite point it isoformed with a preferably circular hole 13 for a purpose to be described.
taken on the Mounted within the ferrule is a clamping member designated broadly'by the numeral the inner wall of the ferrule at that portion thereof provided with the hole 13. At one end the clamping member 14 is preferably taken on the Y somewhat cut away as indicated at 15 correspondlng to the cutting away of the ferrule at the lines 12. Secured upon the intermediate portion of this clamping member is 1 a plunger or button 16 which projects slidably through the hole 13 in the ferrule and which not onlyserves to retain theclamping member in position but'also acts as means whereby the clamping member may be released to permit the pen point, indicated at 17 to drop out of the holder as will be explained.
Coacting with the clamping member is a V substantially V-shaped spring 18 which may be formed as a single length of resilient wire having a bend 19 therein, the bend being located in a slot 20 in the end of the ban dle 10 with the short arm of the spring bearing against the inner wall of the ferrule and its long arm bearing against the end portion 15 of the clamping member 14.
In the use of the device, it will be seen that'in order to insert a pen point 17 inthe holder it is necessary that the operator press upon the button 16 to move the clamping member 14 away from the adjacent portion of the inner periphery of the ferrule so that the pen point may be inserted between the ferrule and the clampingmember until the end thereof engages against the button, as
clearly indi'cated in Figure 3. The operator then releases the pressure upon the button and the spring 18 acts to force the clamping member into engagement with the pen point for holding it in place Whenever it is desired to change the pen point it is merely necessary that the same operation be gone through with, the application of pressure to the button releasing the pen so that it may drop out without it being necessary for the user to touch it with his fingers.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawing, it is quite clear that I have provided a very simple, neat, attractive and convenient device for the purpose specified. It is believed that the construction,
operation and advantages will be readily apparent to one skilled in the art without further explanation.
While I have. shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, constructionv and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the inpOint inirpositiong :andu-spring rneansi within claim 7 Q I r 1,588,284 1 the ferrule engaging the clamping member, :thB spring.=.=means. being1 formed as a single fle11g1the.of.resilient?Wire bent int'oisubstantiaL i ention or the scope of the subjoined claim. ?;Hav1ng: thus described the: invention In a penholder, a handle, a ferrule-ameniber secured upon one. end. thereof and against it-heiinperi periphery of the ferrule formed with a hole, a clamping inember dis and the otherend' portion engaging against posed Within the ferrule and having-a but a'tl le inner side of the clamping Ine1nber, the ton projecting through said hole, and servend of the handle being formed with a slot ing as a plvotailtlnounting, the'ezeiamping-zereceiving sth'embent portion of the spring. member cooperating with the adjacent-por- In testimony whereof I aflix my signation" of ithe' ferrule for maintainingwa pen? ture.
