VARNISH TANK.

My invention relates to tanks for varnish and the like, and has for its object the provision of condensing means which may be placed over a tank containing a volatile substance, as for instance a solvent which is beadded to a varnish, to eti'ectivelyprevent escape ofthe solvent in the form of vapor.
- In the making of various kinds of varnishes, it is the practice to cook the various materials making up the body of the varnish together after which a suitable solvent, such as gasoline, is added to'thin the mixture to the'desired gravity. The gasoline or'other solvent must be added while the prepared varnish is still at a high temperature and as a result rapid vaporization of the solvent takes place until the mixture has cooled somewhat. Obviously, when using an open tank this results in great waste of solvent and also a the hazard due to the escaping vapors.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a condensing hood which may be placed over the varnish tank alter the cookingoperation has been completed whereby the solvent vapors are condensed and returned to the tank.

This condensing hood con'iprises a double walled, cone shaped portion 12 secured to the bottom of which is a cylindrical portion 13. The lower edge of portion 13 is provided with a: flange 1% which rests on the upper edge of the tank 10 and forms a support for the condensing hood when it is placed over the tank. A suitable cooling liquid, such as water, is circulated through the chamber formed hetween the double walls of the conical portion '12 by. means of inlet and outlet pipes 15 and 16.
Inthe interior ofthe hood are two bafiles l7 and 18 somewhat smaller than the portions of the hood in which they are placed. The purpose of the battles is to direct the portion 12.
