- This invention relates ingeneral to, polishing machines and more particularly to a machine for polishing metallurgical speci-.
mens and the likewhich are thus prepared for microscopic study of their metallic structure.
It is the particular object of my invention to provide a polishing machine for rough polishing a plurality of specimens at atime, providing for each novel resilient and adjustable holding means.
It is a further object of my inventionto provide means whereby all of said holding means are so mounted as to be easily and simultaneously brought into view for inspection. It is an object of myinvention to provide a novel operating structure for polishing my specimens.
These and'other objects will appear in the accompanying specification and claims and will be disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which 1 Fig. l is a plan'view of my device.

Referring with greater particularity to the drawing, it will be seen that I have prov ded apolishing table 12 on which the polishing paper is tobe placed. In carrying out my operation I first cement a piece of rough emery or sand paper to thetable and then place the finer polishing paper loosely upon that.
A yoke 20 is adapted to reciprocate to a limited degree longitudinally of the supporting frame being held in proper position by guides 16. 17, 18 and 19 thereon. This yoke is adapted to be reciprocatedby a crank 21 pivotally conneetedat 2l to the yoke at one end and being pivotally connected at its other end to a crank disk 22. The crank disk 22 is fixedly mounted on a shaft 22 on which there is also mounted a relatively large worm gear 23 adapted to be driven by a worm 30 on a shaft 29 bearing in suitable bearings 32 and 33 which is in turn driven by a motor 2 1 through the medium of pulleys 34 and 34 and a belt 25.
A frame 11 is hingedly mounted on yoke 20 by means of hinges 14 and is adapted to be locked in operative position by a latch 15.
The polishing table 12 is dovetailed in a guide Way on the frame 35, (see Fig. 4) and adapted to reciprocate laterally of said frame as will behereinafter described. In a depression in the frame there is-.pro vided a bearing27t' for a shaft 27" upon which there isfixedly mounted arelativ ely small worm gear 28 and a crank disk 27. The gear is adapted to be driven'by a OFFICE.

A flexible resilient membrane 4, such as rubber or the like is stretched'over the rectangular opening in the end of pressure arm 2. A pair of clamp arms 5 of hard flexible steel wire arefixedly attached to base of the frame 11 by means of screws 6 and 7. .These clamp'arms have substantially right angularly shaped outer portions i which cross each other so that" theinsertion of a specimen 3 spreads .them apart, after the manner of a test tubeholcler, into; substantially. a parallelogram. The specimen is thus held resiliently in its position-inn horizontal plane by means of the clamps and is held resiliently against the table 12' to prevent rocking-of the specimen; 1. e.-
counteract any torque or turning movement caused by the relative movement'of table and specimen.
From the foregoing my device will be seen I to operate as follows: After the specimens 3 have hada flat surface ground upon them, they are resiliently and with an adjustable pressure, held in position against the table,

I claim 1. In adevice of the character described,
a polishing table, a specimen holder including a pressure arm terminating in an open frame having provided stretched across and secured to an open frame with a flexible membrane to hold aspecimen against said table, and means for operating said table.

In a devlceof the character described, a polishing table, a specimen holder including a pressurearm terminating in an open frame having provided stretched across and secured to an open frame with a flexible membrane to'hold a specimen against saidt'ableyand means for operating said table, andmeans for adjusting the pressure of said membrane on said specimen.

In a metallurgical specimen polishing machine, a supporting frame, a yoke adapted to reciprocate with respect tosaid frame, a polishing table adapted to reciprocate with respect to said frame, a strip of material having a very highcoeiiicient of" friction permanently attached to said'table and a strip of abrasive material loosely applied upon the surface of said first mentioned strip.
10. In a polishing machine, in combination, a polishing table, a specimen holder, means for relatively moving said table and holder, means providing an extremely rough surface mounted on said table and a flexible strip of abrasive material resting loosely upon the said rough surface, whereby the said flexible strip is maintained in position upon'said surface by friction alone.
