This invention relatesto sheet handling mechanism and finds a particular applica tion in the case of a cylinder or like sheet carrier having grippers which are operated I at different times or in different positions. The object is to provide an efficient and compact mechanism for handling the sheet. E2;- amples of such mechanisms as I have referred to are the intake and delivery mecha- 1 nisms in a multi-couple, multi color press of the ring gear type, such, for example, as that illustrated in the patent to Charles A. Meisel 1,399,360, dated Dec. 6, 1921, and as an example of my invention I have here shown the transfer and delivery mechanism of a two color press of that type.
The exam le of m invention just referred to will be readily understood by reference to the following description-taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein! Fig. 1 is a fragmentary sectional view longitudinally of the press showing the transfer and delivery mechanisms;
Fi 2, on a larger scale, is a section on the hue 2-2 of Fig. 3 showing principally the mechanisms governin the operation of the transfer, cylinder; and
Figs. 3 and 4- are sections on the lines 33 and 44 of Fig. 2, respectively (the ring gear and its grippers are omitted).
Referring to Fig. 1, I have there shown certain portions of a press of the ring gear type such as is disclosed in the patent above re erred to to which reference may be made for a fuller description. The sheet which is to be printed is carried by grippers 5 extending between a pair of ringgears 7 and after the printing operation is transferred from these grippers to the grippers 9 of a transfer cylinder 11 tangent interiorly to the sheet ath and after being carried around .the cylinder 11 is delivered to grippers 13 of a suitable delivery device such as the chain 15 which moves through a path exteriorly tangent to the sheet path at substantially the same point of tangency as the cylinder 11. The general method by which the sheet is carried by grippers 5 into the open grippers 9 which close upon the same substantially at the common point of tangency as the grippers 5' open to release it and the manner in which the sheet after being carried around the cylinder 11 by the grippers 9 is carried into the open. grippers 13 which close on the same while the grippers 9 open to release it will be obviouslto those skilled in the art and is essentially similar to the operation 7 of feeding in the paper described in detail in the Meisel patent above referred to. For
present purposes it is sufficient to note that the opening and closing of the grippers 9 in taking the sheet from the-main grippers 5 of the ring gears is timed somewhat differently or takes place at a somewhat different'point in the revolution of the transfer cylinder 11 from their opening and closing as they deliver the sheet to the grippers 13 of the delivery chains. The mechanism herein illustrated as an example of my invention hasfor itspurpose the proper control of the'grippers 9 on alternate revolutions of'the transfer cylinder 11.
Referring now to Figs. 2 and 4, the gripper mechanism 9 comprises a gripper shaft 17 carrying a pinion 19 which is actuated in well known manner by a sector 21 on a rock shaft 23 carried by an arm 25 fixed to and rotating with the trunnion shaft of the transfer cylinder 11, which shaft 23 maybe rocked by means of the arm 27 carrying a cam roll 29- which is adapted to be operated alternatively (see Fig. 2) by earns 31 and 33. The cams 31 and 33 are mounted on swinging arms 35 and 37 respectively so that they may be moved inwardly at proper times to cooperate with the cam roll 29 or swung outwardly to clear the same and herein they are moved in to cooperate-with the cam 'roll 29 alternately on successive rotations of the cylinder 11.
To control the swinging of the arms 35 and 37 I make use of a cam in the form of an annular disc 39 organized concentrically with the axis of the cylinder 11 and sus-. pended (see Fig. 3) just inside the frame 41 of the'press on rolls 43, the inner face of nisin are compactly arranged adjacent the frame and organized concentrically with the entering theeccentric groove 45 and it will embodiments in different forms.

The arm 37- carrying the other cam 33 may be operated in any suitable manner in alternation with the arm 35. In the embodiment of the invention shown it is independently actuated from the cam groove 4.5. Herein movement of the arm 37 is controlled by a portion of the cam groove substantially diametrical to the portion actuating the arm 35 and thus since the cam or gear 39 rotates at half the speed of the transfer cylf inder, the high point will act to move the two levers respectively substantially in the same phase of alternate revolutions of the transfer cylinder. Operatively to connect the arm 37 with the .camgroove that arm may be in the form of'a lever of the first class and may be joined by the connecting rod 55 to an arm of a bell crank lever 57, theother arm of which carries the cam roll 59 entering the groove 45 at a point sub-- me-trical, as seen in Fig. 2, it will be under stood that the cams 31 and 33 act on the follower 29 which operates the gripper shaft in different angular positions of the latter as they are presented in different angular positions relative to the center of the trans fer cylinder as is necessitated by the requirements of the mechanism for opening and closing the grippers 9 at somewhat different times on alternate revolutions of the cylinder. 7

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I shall express in the following claims.
1. In sheet handling mechanism, in combination, a cylinder and its grippers, meansfor actuating the grippers at desired times comprising a movable cam and means for shifting the same comprising a follower connected therewith and a cam cooperating with said follower'organized about the axis of the cylinder and comprising an internal gear driven from the cylinder.
2. In sheet handling mechanism, in combination, a cylinder and its grippers, means for actuating the grippers at desired times comprising a movable cam and means for shifting the same comprising a follower connected therewith and a cam cooperating with eccentric groove, the levers having followers received insaid groove at different points and means for rotating said member in timed relation to the cylinder.
4. In sheet handling mechanism, in combination, a cylinder and its grippers, means for actuating the grippers at different times on successive revolutions of the cylinder comprising a pair of levers having gripper actuating cams, a rotary member having an eccentric groove, the levers havin followers received in said groove at di erent points and reduction gearing between said cylinder and member. r
5. In sheet handling mechanism, incombination, a cylinder and its grippers, means for actuating the grip ers comprising a gear on the cylinder, intermediate gears meshing therewith, a driven internal gear suspended coaxially of the cylinder, a cam groove in said gear and a movably mounted gripper actuating cam having a follower cooperating with said groove.
6. In sheet handling mechanism, in combination, a cylinder and its grippers, means for actuating the grippers at different times on successive revolutions of the cylinder,
