res PATENT OFFICE.
' GEORGE R. DAVIS, 01 CLEVELAND, OHIO.
GEHTBIFUGAL DIR'IEB.
Application filed October 25, 1924. Serial No. 745,816.
This invention relates to c entrifugal 'driers and more particularly to means for operating the discharge valve in the baskets of cen-.
'trifugal'driers, and has for its object the 5 provlsion of improved power means for operating such valves.
Heretofore the dischargeugal driers of tion pertains, has generally valve of centrifthe class .to which this invenbeen hand operated and considerable. labor has been necessary the dried material.
at times to open it, due to packing of The present invention provides a fluid operated cylinder which is "c onnected to the valve so as to open and close the same when fluid is admitted to the cylinder.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional elevation through a drier embodying this invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
the letter A deslgna stand, as
- drier, which stand consists L bell shaped valve 12 is provided with and u wardly base member 2 and spaced I re 3 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line III -III of Figure 1. Referring more particularly. to
the draw tes the housing known form of generally of a s1de members 3 and 4. An engine 5 is mounted on the base 2 for furnishing the power to operate the drier.
The forward ends of side members 3 and 4 are joined and support a suitable bearing 6 for the spindle or centrifugal shaft 7 which supports the perforated drier basket 8 at its lower end. The basket 8 is mounted within an imperforate stationary casing 9 adapted thrown off by The bottom wall 10' of to catch or intercept the fluid the centrifugal basket 8.
the basket 8' is provided with a centrally arranged dlscharge opening 11 adapted closed by a low tubular stem'13 and is spindle or shaft and have a vertical slidin said shaft to open to be normally bell'shaped valve or closure 12. The
a holmounted on the 7 so as to rotate therewith g movement on and close the opening 11.
The upper end of the stem 13 is provided with a pair of spaced collars or flanges 15 between which a yoke 16 is'loosely mounted. The yoke 16 is provided with a rearwardly offset connecting arm '17 adapte' to extend above theupper edge of the casing 9 when the ermost or closed p.os1t1on.'
valve 12 is in its low- A connecting or upper faces or the combined inlet and ily apparent.
operating rod 18 has its lower end secured to the arm 17 and its upper end secured to der 20.
The cylinder 20 is disposed verticall between the sidemembers 3 and 4 of the ousing A and is supported at its lower end by a cross brace 21 extending between the members 3 and 4 and at its upper end b braces 22 and 23 which extend upwardly rom the 4 to the upper end of the cylinder.
A suitable guide bar 25 is arranged vertically at the rear, of the rod 18 and its upper end secured to the cross brace 21, while its lower end is secured to the members 3 and 4 of the housing7 A. The rear end of the connecting arm 1 is provided with a roller 27 adapted to engage the. guide bar 25 so as to steady and guide the yoke 16 durin its vertical travel.
Fluid is adapted to be supplied to the cylinder 20othrough a supply pipe 28 which connects through a four-Way valve 29 with exhaust pipes 30 and 31 leading to the opposite ends of the cylinder. i
In order to prevent sudden jarrin of the operating mec anism and valve, if t e fluid should be exhausted from-the cylinder 20 suddenly, I provide cushion springs 32 and flanges of the members 3 and' 33 at the opposite ends of the cylinder against which the piston 19 will strike.
The operation of this device will be read- When it is desired to lift the valve 12 to discharge dried material from the basket 8, fluid will be admitted to the lower end of the cylinder 20, thereby forcing up the piston 19 and lifting the valve 18 and oke 16. lower t e valve through the connecting rod When it is desired to again 12 the cogitrol valve 29 will be turned so as to admit fluid to the upper end of the cylinder 20 and allow the discharge or exhaust of the fluid from the lower side of the piston 19, thereby forcing the piston and lowering the valve 12. r
I provide the yoke 16 with considerable clearance between its face and the stem 13 of the. valve so that if the basket oscillates when rotating, it will be free to strike the wooden buffer ring 35 located in the lower end of the casing 9, thus preventingspringing of the power shaft 7 While I have shown and described only the scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
