IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY-BOXES FOR REVOLVING SHAFTING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 158,799, dated January 19, 1875; application filled Y June 26, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARQUIS R. JoNEs, of Darien, in the county of Walworth and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Boxing for Revolving Shafting; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention relates to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specicatiomin which- Fignre l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, Fig. 3, end view of cylinder.
Myinvention relates to boxing of cylindrical form, to be placed around universal joints in revolving shafting, the boxing being of wood or metal, and so arranged as to be adapted to cover the joint when the shaftin g runsat angle. By having the boxing so'arranged, when any substance is caught by the same it will instantly stop, therebyT preventing accident to the operator by being drawn around the shaft. In Patent N o. 105,695, issued to Ine July 26,
1870, I have specified and claimed boxing of cylindrical form, of wood or metal, in sections to accommodate any required size or length of shaft, but these do not provide for the universal joint.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the shaft 5 A', universal or knuckle joint; A", the boxing; B, hinges made of metal; a, link; a', staple b, pin. B' is a wood or metal cylvinder for boxing universal joints. It can be provided upon the inside with one or more lugs, D, for the purpose of holding the cylinder B' properly when in position.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The cylinder B' is placed around the shaft near where it is to be secured. The boxing A" is then placed in position aroundthe shaft A' and secured. The cylinder B' is placed in position so that the rim C occupies the end ofthe boxing, the lugs D fitting in V-shaped places in the boxing as shown in Fig. 2 at c. The

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-v In combination with the boxing A", the cylinder B', rim O, arms c, link a, pin b, and lugs D, substantially as and for the purpose specified and described.
