ROLL FOR MAKING CORRUGATED PAPER.
Application filed July 24, 1920, Serial No. 398,727. Renewed November 7, 1925.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved corrugated roll, capable of being heated readily by electricity and of having its corrugated sections exchanged readily for others, so that the machine of which it forms an essential part can be modified readily to produce one kind of corrugated paper or another, whereas in present practise a given machine is devoted generally to the production of one pattern or corrugated paper or at least all of the corrugated rolls must be replaced in their entirety by others, thereby entailing great expense in the manufacture of corrugated paper. The improved roll is so constructed that the corrugated portions of the roll can be made in comparatively short sections which can be removed and replaced or rearranged readily from or upon the main body of the roll which does not require to be changed and receives the heating connections. The invention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings in which it is illustrated, and in which- Figure 1 is a view partly in longitudinal section showing the improved roll with its,
heating connections and portions of the supporting frame. Figure 2 is a partial view in vertical section of a paper corrugating machine in which three such rolls as that shown in Fi re 1 are indicated. I ii machine in which the improved roll is embodied may be of any usual or suitable construction and need not be described in detail herein. It includes metal side frames a by which are supported the corrugated rolls 6, 0 and d, the corrugations of which intermesh like the teeth of spur gears, motion being imparted by means well known in the art and not necessary to be described herein as they form no part of the present invention. As shown 0 early in the drawing each roll has a hollow body portion e which may be mounted in the bearings of the frames a. This body portion. is preferably of substantial mass so that it may act as a reservoir of heat, and may be cylindrical exteriorly, as shown. Upon this body portion are mounted a spindle in, upon which is mounted a sleeve the several short corrugated sleeve sections f which are formed independently of each other and, being comparatively light in weight, can be handled readily, can be removed from or replaced upon or rearranged on the body portion e without difficulty, and can be made at less expense thanv a single corrugated roll of the full length. These corrugated sleeve sections are preferably arranged to rotate with the body portion 6 and may be held thereon by a key 9.
Each end of the hollow body portion 6 is closed by a cap h and the caps are formed to support, through a suitable insulation 11 65 l of suitable insulating material. One electrical conductor m may be connected directly to the spindle and the other n to the frame of the machine. The resistance coil 0, wound upon the insulating sleeve'Z, has one end an electrical contact with the spindle k, as at 0, and the other end an electrlcal contact with the body e, as at 0.
When current of suitable intensity is supplied to the coil 0, through the described connections, the body member e of the roll quickly becomes heated to the requisite temperature and the corrugated sections f, which are in contact with the body 2, likewise become heated to the required temperature.
It will be understood that the sleeve sections fcan be shifted rotarily with respect to one another, if it is desired to produce a corrugated paper with short, staggered corrugatlons instead of long corrugations, and that one or more of the sections can be replaced by another or other sections for further variation in the pattern of the corrugated paper. 7
Various other changes in details of construction and arrangement can be made to suit different conditions of use.
I claim as m invention:
In combination with a corrugated roll for a corrugated paper machine comprising a hollow body member, corrugated sleeve sections removably and adjustably secured to the body member, a spindle extending through the body member but insulated 1 with the hollow body member, an electrical conductor secured to the frame and a second electrical conductor in frictional contact with 10 the spindle.
