HOSIERY.

This invention relates to improvements in hose or stockings such as are worn by men, women and Clllltll'll, and is especially adapted for that-style knownas the-halt hose or stocking.

The objects of this invention are to provide a hose or stocking-i it this character which will conveniently and easily adjust itself .to'the leg and which is comfortable to the wearer, and does not unnecessarily bind or pinch the leg; but has a light and clinging effect thereto, without the use of an additional support such asis in use at the present time.

The further objects are to providea stocking oi this character which is-so constructed that it will obviate the necessity oi rolling the tops of the stockings to hide the garters which are now used.

it will be seen I accomplish the foregoing by referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification in which Fig. is a side elevation of the upper portion of my improved hose or stocking; Fig. 2 is alongitudinal section of the upper portion of my improved stocking shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 11 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings which show a general embodiment of this invention and it being understood are more or less diagrammatic, it will be seen there can be many changes in the general form of construction without departing from the spirit of my invention, and it will be understood that the principal. point of this invention is to provide a hose or stocking having a top so formed that it will cling to any part of the leg whether it is located above or below the knee, and does not depend on any subsidiary member to retain it in the position in which it is placed, and the top being so retained that it will securely support the rest of the stocking, and cause it to snugly lit the leg of the wearer.

Referring to the drawings it will be seen I provide a stocking 2 having a double top 8 and d which are connected to the leg or body portion 5 as at 6 in the usual. manner, and it will be noted that the top 3 is smaller in diameter than. the top 4, and it is also shorter than the top 4:, and it is so constructed as to have a contracted portion near its bottom as at 7, and is further contracted at its top 8 which is fformedof a selvedge 9, this se'lvedge 'isot a closer thread-construction, and strengthened by reinforcing it with arr-extra thread or 'threads as the case may require while the stocking is being constructed 0r knitted, owing to the different textures of the various threads used in making the different styles orquality of'thetops. It will be understood the thinner or-smaller the diameter of the threads used in making the tops, the greater the number of threads will be required to reinforce the selvedged edge, or else threads-oi a diii'erent quality, or a thread of a larger diameter of the same quality, to make up for the number ofsmaller threads which will necessarily, have :to be used for reinforcing the same. it will be noted that the top 4 is longer, or in other words extends above the top 3 a ,sullicient amount so that when the top 3 .is pulled up on the .leg, and-thus stretched t-he outer top 4 will be able to entirely cover the top 3. The top 4 is also provided with a selvedged edge 10 which is i ormedin the same manner as the selvedged edge 9 of the top 3. It will be understood that the tops 3 and 4 will be of a-ditterent thread construction from the leg or "body portion of the stocking, and in some instances the tops 3 and 4 will be of a different thread construction from each other, also there will be instances when these tops will be made of a diil'erent material from each other, or both or one will be of a different material from the material used in the leg or body portion of the stocking.

The operation or action of this hose or st clung is very simple. The top 4 is turned down, and the stocking is pulled on the leg by the top 3, and in so doing the contracted portion 7 or the top 3 will resist being pulled up on the leg, and thus stretch or distort the fabric oithe top in a vertical manner,

and this distortion will cause the diameter of the top to contract and hug the leg, and the selvedge 9 will bind tightly to the leg when released from the hand, and the top 3 will hold firmly, and support the stocking securely. The top 4: is then pulled up to cover the top 3, and it will stay in position by the binding of the selvedge 10 on the leg, as it supports only its own Weight or strain.

That I desire to claim is:

1. An article of manufacture comprising a stocking having two distinct tops and being disconnected at their respective tops, one top being smaller and shorter than the other top, and located within the other top, and acting as a support for the. stocking.

2. An article of manufacture comprising a stocking having two distinct tops and being disconnected at their respective tops, one top being smaller and shorter than the other top, and located within the other top, and acting as a support for the stocking, and the upper edges of the tops being contracted and of a stronger thread construction than the main portion of the tops.

3. An article of manufacture comprising a stocking having two distinct tops and being disconnected at their respective tops, one top being smaller and shorter than the other top, and located within the other top, and a contracted portion decreasing its diameter near the bottom of the inner top, and said contraction being just above its connection With the outer top, and said inner top acting as a support for the stocking.

4. An article of manufacture comprising a stocking having two distinct tops and being disconnected at their respective tops, one top being smaller and shorter than the other top, and located within the other top, and a contracted portion near the bottom of the inner top and said contraction being just above its connection with the outer top and the upper edge of the inner top being contracted and of a stronger thread construction than the main portion of the top, and said inner ,top acting as a support for the stockin 5. An article of manufacture comprising a stocking having two distinct tops and being disconnected at their respective tops, one top being smaller and shorter than the other top, and located Within the other top, and a contracted portion near the bottom of the inner top, and said contraction being just above its connection with the outer top and the upper edges of the tops being contracted and of a stronger thread construction than the main portion of the tops, and the inner top acting as a support for the stocking.

6. An article of manufacture comprising a stocking having two distinct tops, one top being smaller and shorter than the other top, and located within the other top and connected to the outer top at the point or place where it unites with the body portion of the stocking and the upper edges of the tops being contracted and ot' a stronger thread construction than the main portion of the tops, and the inner top acting as a support for the stocking.

7. an article of manufacture comprising a stocking having two distinct tops of different thread construction from the body portion of the stocking, one top being smaller and shorter than the other top, and located within the other top and connected to the outer top at a point or piace where it unites with the body portion of the stocking and acting as a support for the stocking.
