HAT-POLISHING- ANI) LIKE MACHINE.
Application fi ed February This invention relates to machines of the type employed for polishing or velouring felt hats or for effecting similar finishing operations on hat bodies. Machines of this class comprise a rotary brushing-member and a rocker arm pivoted near one end for swinging movement (usually by pedal-operated means) towards and away from the brushing-member, and provided at its free end with a resilient pad for pressing the hat body into contact with the working surface of the brushing-member. The brushingmember may take various forms according to the particular operations for which it is to be used; for instance it may be a felt bob for polishing or a carding member for velouring.
The present invention provides in a machine of the class specified above the combination with the aforesaid rotary brushing member of a pivoted lever, a bow-shaped arm secured at one end to said lever and having its free end located in proximity to the brushing-member aforesaid, means operable at will to rock the lever aforesaid about its pivot in a direction to move the free end of the arm towards and away from the brushing-member, a pressure-applying pad carried on the free end of the bowshaped arm, means to permit of the angular adjustment of said arm in relation to the lever about an axis which passes substantially centrally through the pad and across the arc of the arm to the point of connection between the arm and the lever, and means to lock the arm to the lever in any desired position of angular adjustment.
Preferably the pressure-applying pad is so mounted on the free end of the bowshaped arm as to be angularly adjustable about the aforesaid axis round which the arm as a whole is adjustable.
According to a further feature of the i11- vention a pivoted pedal is coupled by a link to the aforesaid lever to which the pad carrying arm is attached, and means are provided to permit of adjustment in length of the coupling link, thereby enabling the pad to be adjusted towards and away from the brushing-member.

A rotary brushing-member 5 mounted on a spindle 6 is supported by the machine frame 7 tor rotation about a horizontal axis. The brushing-member 5 may be a felt bob for polishing, or it may be formed, for example, as a carding member for other finishing operations on the hat body. Operable in conjunction with the brushing-member 5 the machine provides a bow-shaped arm 8, at the upper and free end of which a resilient pressure-applying. pad 9 is carried. The bow-shaped arm 8 is attached at its lower end to one arm of a lever 10 which is fulcrumed on a rod 15 for swinging movement about a horizontal axis. The other arm of the lever 10 is operatively connected to a pedal lever 11 which is pivotally mounted at 32 on the machine frame. The connection between the levers 10 and 11 takes the form of a screw-threaded rod 12 opposite ends of which are screwed respectively rightand left-handed. The ends of the rod 12 are engaged by internally screw-threaded sleeves 18, 14, the former being pivotally connected to the lever 10 and the latter similarly connected to the pedal lever 11.
It will be seen that by depressing the pedal lever 11 the lever 10 is rocked about its axis in a direction to move the pad 9 towards the periphery of the brushing-member 5, similarly if the pedal 11 be raised the pad 9 will. be drawn away from the brushingmember. The pedal lever 11 and associated parts which by their wei ht exert a lever age in the clockwise direction about the fulcrum 15) are so weighted in relation to the weight of the bow-shaped arm 8 and its as sociated. parts (which by their weight exert a leverage in the counter clockwise direction about the fulcrum 15) that the tendency to rotate the lever 10 in one direction about its axis is balanced by the tendency towards rotation in the oppceitc dire parts are shown in their normal, that is balanced positions in Figure 1. A compression spring 16 is located below the pedal lever 11 and operates to resist downward movement of said lever. Thus when the pedal is dc pressed to bring the pad 9 up to the brushing-member there is a resilient. force tending to bring the parts back to their normal positions.
The adjustable connection between the levers 10 and 11 enables the operator to'vary the gap which normally exists between the pad 9and the periphery of the brushingmemberr To efi'ect such a variation it is only necessary to turn the screw-threaded rod 12 in one or other direction and when the necessary adjustment has been made, to lock the rod against further turning move ment; for this purpose alocknut 17 is pro vided. The extensible connecting link between the'levers 10 and 11 thus allows of the pad 9 being moved towards the brushing member" 5 in order to'make up for wear in the latter.
The pad'supporting arm 8 is bow-shaped in order to provide the'necessary clearance for the hat body when the latter is passed overthe pad 9. When operating on certain portions of" the hat body additional clearance is desirable and for his purpose the invention'prov-ides means to permit of the angular adjustmentof the arm about an axis 18 which passes from end to end'of the arm across the arc of the bow. The lower end of the arm' 8 is secured to the lever 10 by a screw 19 the centre line of which is coincidentw-iththe aforesaidax-is 18. After the arm 8h'as been adjusted to the required angulanposition it may be locked firmly to the lever 10 by means of a lock nut 30. The pad 9 is secured to the upper end of the arm 8 by ascrew20,.the:centre line of which is also coincident with the aforesaid axis 18. lVhen the arm 8 has been-swung through say from the positionillustrated in Figure 1, it is'neeessary in order to bring the pad 9 square withthe working surface of the brushing-member, tomove the pad in relationto thearm through a similar angle. When the pad has been thus adjusted it is secured in its new position by a lock nut 21. It will be seen that with this arrangement thebow-shaped arm 8 may be adjusted to any desired angular position, the pad9 being in each case brought back'tothe same position in relation to the working surface of the brushing-member.
The pad 9 in addition to beingadjustable about the axis 18 is also adjustable about an axis at right-angles thereto. Figure 3 shows clearly the method by which the pad is secured to the upper end of the screw 20. Cooperating ratchet teeth 22are formed on the two parts andadjustment of the one relatively to the other takes place about the axis of a clamping screw 23. The above arrangement allows of the pad being adjusted to contact with the brushing-member at different levels. v

In a. hat polishing or like machine of the class specified the combination with a rotary brushing-membcr of a pivoted. lever, a bowshaped arm secured at one end to said lever and having its free end located in proximity to the brushing member aforesaid, means operable at will to rock the lever aforesaid about its pivot in a direction to move the free end of the arnrtowards and away from the brushingmember, means to permit of theadjustmcntof the arm on the leVerFangularly about an axis which passes through the point of eonnectionof the." arm and the leverand through the=extremity of the free end of the arm, a pressLire-applying pad mounted on means to permit said free-end of the arm, of thead ustmcnt of said pad on the arm about the aforesaid axisround which the arm as a whole is angularly adjustable, andmeans to-lock the arm to the lever and the pad to the arm in any desired positionsof adjustment.
2. In a hat polishing or like machine of the class specified the combination w-iththe rotary brushing member of apivoted lever, a bowshaped arm secured atone-end to said lever and having its free end located in proximity to the brushing member aforesaid,
means operable at will to rock the lever aforesaid about-its pivot in a direction to move the free end of the arm towards-and away from the-brushing member, meansto permit. of the adjustment of the I arm on the lever angularly about an axis which passes through-the point of connection of the arm andthelever and through the extremity of the free endof the arm', apressure-applying'pad mounted on said free end of the arm, means to permit of the adjustment of said pad on the arm about the aforesaid axis around which the arm as a Whole is angularly'adjustable and also about an axis at right angles to that round which the arm as a whole is adjustable,;and means to lock the arnrto the lever and the pad to the arm in anyidesired positions of adjustment.
3. In a hat polishing or like machine of the class specified the combination with the rotary brushing-member, of a pivoted lever, a bow-shaped arm secured at one end to said lever andhaving its free end located in proximity to the brushing member aforesaid,

In a hat polishing or like machine of the class specified the combination with the rotary brushing-member, of a lever pivotally mounted between its ends for rocking movement about a horizontal axis, a bowshaped arm attached at one end to the lever aforesaid on one side of the pivot thereof and extending at its free end into proximity with the brushing-member, a pressureapplying pad carried on the aforesaid free end of the arm, a pedal operatively connected to the lever on that side of the pivot remote from the bow-shaped arm, and so weighted that the leverage exerted by the pedal and associated parts about the pivot of the lever is substantially equal to that exerted by the arm and associated parts about said pivot, and a spring arranged to resist downward movement of the pedal.
In a hat polishing or like machine of the class speclfied the comblnatlon with a rotary brushing-member mounted for rotation about a horizontal axis, of a lever pivoted between its ends for rocking movement about a horizontal axis below that of the brushing-member, a bow-shaped arm secured at one end to the lever aforesaid on one side of the pivot thereof and extending upwardly into proximity with the brushing-member, a resilient pressure-applying pad carried on the free end of the arm, a pivoted pedal located below that end of the lever aforesaid which is remote from the bowshaped arm and connected to said end by a link which is adjustable in length, the pedal and link being so weighted that the leverage exerted by them about the pivot of the lever is substantially equal to that exerted in the opposite direction about said pivot by the arm and its associated parts, spring means arranged to resist downward movement of the pedal, means to permit of the angular adjustment of the arm in relation to the lever aforesaid and of the pad in relation to the arm about an axis which is common to both and extends across the are of the arm and means to lock the arm to the lever and the pad to the arm in any desired positions of adjustment.
