Description

June 8,1926. 1,587,815 A. BOAS APPARATUS FOR USE} IN MOUNTING SLOTTING AND LIKE TOOLS Filed July 12. 1923 INvENTOR M M ATTORNEY Patented June 8, 1926.
UNITED STATES i i 1,587,815? PATENT orr es.
ANDRE BOAS, OF PARIS, FRANCE, ASSIGNOR TO THE SOCIETE ANONYME DES ENGRENAGES CITROEN, 0F PAR-IS, FRANGE, A CORPORATION OF FRANCE.
APPARATUS FOR USE IN MOUNTING SLO'ITING AND LIKE TOOLS.
Application filed July 12, 1923, Serial No. 651,068, and in France May S), 1923.
a pivoted link, the outer end of which is adapted to be attached to a pivotal support connected with a rigid portion of the slotting machine frame, the link connection between the bar and the fixed anchor pivot being shift-able from one side to the other of the vertical axis of the machine to enable the slotting tool to out first one side and then the other of a flaring arcuate slot, when such form of slot is desired. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of a standard slotting machine having the at tachment applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation of the lower end of the tool carrying bar in cutting relation.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the adjustable table or bed of a standard slotting machine and 1 the vertical reciprocating slide, which normally carries the slotting tool adapted to be secured to the slide in various positions of adjustment in a vertical relation, as will be understood by those familiar with this type of apparatus.
As heretofore employed, slotting machines of this type were adapted for cutting straight sided slots only and it is the purpose of the instant invention to provide a novel form of jig or attachment for machines of this type to adapt the same to cut arcuate slots in the work whenever desired, the sides of the slots being either parallel or divergent and the curvature of the faces of the slots being in the direction of the reciprocation of the slotting tool. To effect these results, the attachment comprises a bar 8 provided with a pivotal support 6 intermediate its ends and suitable clamping or similar means for securing a slotting tool 7 on one end there of. The opposite end of the bar 8 is provided with an eye 5, to which is pivotally connected one end of the link 4, the outer end of the link being connected to a fixed pivot 3, which is carried by a fixed bracket 3 secured to the frame of the slotting machine. Preferably, similar brackets 3 are secured on each side of the machine as indicated, so that the outer end of the link 41- may be pivotally connected to either side of the ma chine, as will be understood from the drawings. Obviously, the pivotal connection (3 may be adjusted vertically on the tool slide '1', and, by properly adjusting the pivotal point, the extent of curvature of the side of the slot formed in the work by the tool 7 may be accurately regulated. In the oper ation of the invention, the movement of the tool slide 1' is regulated by the usual adjusting means to accommodate the particularwork and the feeding of the table or bed 1v correspondingly regulated. When the attachment is applied, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the reciprocation of the tool slide 1' causes the tool carrying bar 8 to be reciprocated with the slide 1 and also to be swung on its pivotal connection 6 with the tool slide by means of the link 1, which, as indicated, is secured at its outer end to an anchor pivot 3 mounted on a stationary part of the machine. This reciprocating and swinging movement of the tool bar 8 causes the tool 7 to traverse an arcuate path and to out a slot that is arcuate or curved in a vertical direction, or in the general direction of movement of the reciprocating tool slide. If the sides of the slot are to be parallel, the tool is maintained in the relation shown, with the link 4: connected to the pivot 3 on one side of the machine during the whole operation, the length of the slot being determined by the fore and after feeding movement of the table or bed 1 and the width of the slot being regulated by the cross feed of said table, as is customary in machines of this character. If it is desired to cut a slot having parallel sides curved in the opposite direction to those shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the outward connection of link i is changed to the opposite side of the machine, as indicated in dotted lines, the operation of the machine will then produce a slot having parallel sides curved to the left, as indicated in dotted lines. If it is desired to cut a slot having divergent or flaring curved sides, the link is first connected to the pivot 3 on one side and the machine operated to efiect the cutting of one lateral section of the slot, after which the link is shifted to the other side and the other lateral section of the slot is cut, the
relative JOSlfilOllS ot the several elements of the attachment durin the several operations being; in full and do ted lines respectively.
Otiviously, the size, proportions and rela tive arrangement of the several elements of: the attachment may be varied and regulated to cut slots of any desired de th and degree of curvature, and each particular form of the attachment may be adjusted and regulated to vary the degree of curvature of the sides of the slot. e
What I claim is: r
1. An arena-to slot cutting attachment for a clotting machine erovided with a tool slide, comprising a bar iavin a pivot connection intermediate its ends ac opted to be mounted at said ivot connection on the tool slide of the, maciine, a tool support on one end of said bar and a link pivoted to the other end oi": said her and adapted to he pivotally con= nected to a fined part of the machine disposed laterally of the end of the bar.
2. The combination with a slotting machine having a reoiprocatin tool slide, of tool carrying means adapts to cut arcuate slots, said means comprising a bar having a pivot connection intermediate its end adapted to be mounted at said pivot connection on the tool slide of the machine, a tool support on one end of said her, a link pivadapted tohe mounted at said pivot connection'on the tool slide of the machine, a tool support on one end of said her, a link pivoted to the other end of said bar, and pivots mounted upon the fixed frame otthe machine laterally of said bar for connection to the outer end of said link.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ANDRE BOAS.
