UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BRE'ISNYDER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BATH
BRUSH.
Application filed November 20, 1922. Serial No. 601,978.
My invention relates to brushes, and more particularly to bath brushes and means attached thereto whereby the operation ofthe bath brush is facilitated.
One of the objects of my invention is to,
out the divers objects in substantially the manner hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings that form a part of this specification.
In the drawings:v Fig. l represents a view of my inventio showing the same in use with the handle flexed, the joint in the center of the handle being covered by the latch.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my invention, as shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an'end elevation of the brush and showing a longitudinal edge of the handle, the joint in the center of the handle being covered as in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a top plan of a clamp device for connecting the handle to the brush.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the structure shown in Fig. 4.
Figs. G to 11 are views of modified structures for clamping the handle to the brush.
Fig. 12 is a plan of the handle partially folded.
Referring to the drawings, particularly Figs. 1 to 5, it will be seen the brush comprises a back 15 which is usually of wood, or the like, and formed of oval shape, from one of the faces of which back the bristles or hair project, and upon the opposite face of which I prefer to secure the attaching device for removably mounting the handle.
The handle consists of metal strips 16 jointed, to fold when not in use as shown in detail in Figs. 4, 7 and 12, said handle being, say, three to four feet or more in length, is flexible and yielding, such as spring metal of a suitable gauge. When attached to the brush the whole structure maybe operated in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1 by flexing handle 16 transversely into a segmental shape and the ends of the handle grasped by the hands so that the person will not have to distort his orher anatomy or twist intoawkward positions to operate the brush upon portions of the back and other members of the body. rlhe ends of the handle are provided with apertures 17 so that when the structure is not in use it may be conveniently hung upon a nail, hook or the like. i
'lhe means for securingy the handle upon the brush is in the nature of a holder or carrier and comprises a plate 18 of rectangu lar shape having lateral upstanding flanges 19 along the opposite longitudinal edges thereof, and is provided adjacent its ends with screw holes 2O for attaching the holder or carrier to the back of the brush. Inter` 19 are of triangular shape and are bored adjacent the apex thereof to receive a transverse pin 22 upon which a clamping pawl is mounted. This pawl has a finger piece 23 and a cam shaped end portion 24 that is bored longitudinally to receivepin v22 so that the eccentric portion of the cam is positioned intermediate ridges 21.
The handle 16, being a fiat strip,is inserted betweenl side flanges 19 .of the plateand rests with one faceV against ridges 21 with the finger piece 23 in an upward position. When the handle has been properly located the finger piece is moved down to the position shown in Figs. 4 and 5, whereupon the cam portion 24 bears upon handle strip 16 between ridges 21 and causes a slight flexing thereof to lock the latter upon the brush.
In Figs. 6 and 7 holder plate 18 is provided with the side fianges 19, but in lieu of the transverse ridges 21, I have provided the ends of the plate with upwardly curved fianges 25. The clamp member, which is mounted upon pin 22, is provided with spaced cams 26 so as to engage the longitudinal edges of the flexible handle 16ZL and t'hereby straddles the connecting element of the handle, which latter, as shown in Fig. 12, is made in two pieces for conveniently folding the same, and is secured together by a pivotal pin or rivet 1Gb. This is for the purpose of permitting the handle to be folded to reduce its length whenever it is desired to store or pack the same in a restrictedv space.
In Figs. 8 and 9, the holder plate 18 is provided in its central port-ionwithL an emv bossment 27, and one of' the side flanges 19 is provided With a horizontal lateral extension 19a upon which is pivotally mounted a yielding, swinging latch bar 28. The opposite end of the latch bar is provided with a lateral extension 29 that permits bar 28 being moved into an open slot 30 formed longitudinally inthe adjacent side flange and' Whichcslo't is so constructed as to removably retain the latchl bar therein and permit it tobear upon the handle and press it down towards embossment 27.
In Figs. lO and: 11, holder plate 18 is provided" with' the longitudinal side flanges 19, one of Which is provided with an overhanging portion 31, and below this overhanging portion this flange is provided With an inwardly extending emboss1nent'32, While handle strip 16' is provided with a correspondingly shaped notchV Opposite embossment 32Y the other 'flange has a bearing bracket 35 extending therefrom in Which a bell-crank cam 36 Aisv pivotally mounted, and which has an overhanging lip k37 to fit upon the upper face of'handle strip 16 when in locked position forpreventing accidental sidewise movementy or displacement of the handle.
It is obvious that modifications may be made Withoutl departingl from the scope'of the 'appendedy claims, and I desire it understood)` that suchchanges are contemplated by me.
What I'claimis:
1; A device ofthe kind specified comprising a brush having a suitable back and a handle 'removably' connected intermediate its ends to said* back; said handle comprising a bar' of elastic material of substantially greater Width than thickness and flexible only in the plane of its least thickness.
2. A device of the kind described comprising abrush havinga suitable back, a holder plate mounted thereon, a cam device pivotally mounted upongsaidholder plate, and a handle of relatively thin spring metal removably secured in said device by said cam member.
3i A device ofthe kind described comprising a brush having a suitable back, a plate secured to said back having a channel therethrough, a handle consisting of lengths of elastic material pivoted together andl insertable into either end of said channeled plate, and clamping means carried by the plate for removably maintaining said han dle on said plate.
4. A device'of the kind described comprising a brush hz'ivingl ay suitable back', a channeled plate secured to saidback, a handle of resilient material positioned in said channeled plate, and a cam pivotally carried by said plate for removably maintaining Said handle on said plate.
5. A device of the kind described comprising a brush having a suitable back, a plate secured to said back, spaced projections on said plate, a clamping element above the face of said plate intermediate said projections, and a flexible handle resting upon said projections and engaged by saidv clamping element.
6. A device of the kind described'comprising brush having a suitable back, a plate secured to said back, spaced projections on said plate, a cam pivotally mounted upon said plate intermediate said projections, cand a flexible handle resting upon said projecttions and engaged upon its opposite face bysaid' cam wherebyv said handle is slightly flexed intermediate said projections.
Signed at Chicago, county ofA Cook and State of Illinois, this 14th day of November, 1922.
WILLIAM BRETSNYDER.
