VINIPROVEMENT' IN WEATHER-STRIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 158,762, dated January 12, 1875; application filed December 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. VALEN- TINE, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Weather- Strips, of which the following is a specification:
This invention is illustrated in the accompanyin g drawing, which represents a crosssection of a weather-strip constructed according to my invention, which consists in combining cambric, muslin, or other equivalent stiffening material with felt to form the packing of the weather-strip, the muslin being cemented to the felt, so that they are united to each other.
The object of applying the muslin to the felt is, among other things, to stiffen the felt, and to impart to it greater elasticity than it possesses in itself, so that when the packing has been bent in using it, the elasticity imparted-to it by the layer of muslin will bring it back to its original position when the pressure which bent it iswithdrawn. The muslin covering also enables me to clear off the dust from the packing more easily than from a felt surface.
Another feature of this invention consists in bevelin g the edge of the packing G, whereby it is made more capable of adjusting itself to the surfaces or joints which are to be closed.
The drawing shows a cross-section of my weather-strip, composed of a strip, A, of wood molding or other hard material, suitable for supporting the packing, the strip being provided at one edge with a groove, B, to receive the inner edge of the packing, which is inserted in the groove, and retained there by the aid of suitable cement or adhesive material, or other means. posed of felt, G, overlaid 011 one side by a stiffening material, D, which extends with the felt into the groove B, and is securely cemented to the felt by any suitable adhesive material.
The stiffening material which I have applied in this illustration of my invention consists of black cambric or muslin.
The muslin covers and protects the felt, and can be cleaned from dust more easily than felt.
,In order to make the edge of the packing more pliant and adjustable, and the more capable of producing a tight joint, I bevel the edge of the felt, as shown at E, and thereby obtain a surface which readily adjusts itself to the opposing surface of the casing or joint which is to be packed, the beveled edge yielding uniformly in one direct-ion, owing to the bevel, so that the beveled surface lies flat against the casing or joint, and produces a more perfect fit.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A packing for weatherstrips, composed of felt 0, combined with a cambrlc or muslin covering, substantially as described.
2. The beveled edge E on the packing O of weather-strips, substantially as described.
