IMPROVEMENT IN LEATHER -DRESSING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 158,761, dated January 12, 1875; application filed January 2, 1874.
, To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN KEIL TULLIs, of Glasgow, in the county of Lanark, North Britain, have invented certain Improvements in Leather-Dressing Machines, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to perform the various operations required in hide and leather dressing, such as setting and resetting, leveling, skiving, and removing. grease more expeditiously and uniformly than heretofore, by the machine which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in Which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the machine; Fig. 2, a plan view; Fig. 3, a side elevation;

turns a shaft, a, provided at one end with fast and loose pulleys J, and carrying a cylinder, 0, on the surface of which are spiral scrapers, cutters, or knives c, secured by jaws d and bolts e, as best observed in Figs. 4 and 5, or
by other equivalent fastenings.
The cutters or scrapers are preferably arranged, as shown in the drawing, with the spirals diverging in opposite directions from the center of the cylinder.
Directly over the cylinder is situated a series of sprin gs, D, which may be either spiral, vertical, or of the form shown-in Fig. 3. In
t the present instance, they are attached at one end to a rail, E, supported by levers F, which have their fulcrums on a rock-shaft, f, adapted to bearings in the side frames A. The outer ends of the springs D rest upon a rail, G, supported by fixed brackets g. The required degree of pressure is exerted on the springs D by weighted levers H, secured to the rockshaft f,- but this pressure may be instantly relieved by lifting one of the levers H by means of a supplemental lever, K, having its fulcrum at h, and provided with a foot plate or treadle, L.. A cushion, M, of elastic material, is introduced between the springs D and the cylinder,-to prevent direct contact of the said springs with the hide or cutters.
In operating the machine, the hide or butt in is passed 'over the table M and between the springs and cylinder, the effect of the spiral scrapers, knives, or cutters being to remove the grease, set, reset, level, or skive the hide, as the case may be, this depending upon the state of preparation of the said hide.
When it is necessary to draw the hide back from between the said springs and cylinder, the former are raised and the pressure relieved by simply depressing the treadle L.
The machine, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, is adapted more especially for scraping, setting, resetting, and removing the grease from hides or butts; but for leveling and scraping I prefer to reverse the arrangement of the parts, as shown in Fig. 6that is, to place the cutting cylinder uppermost, and the springs D beneath the same. In this case, a parallel upward pressure of the springs is obtained by attaching them to guided blocks 19. Two guide-bars, n n, are so arranged beneath the cylinder as to permit but a small portion of the hide to be acted on or skived by the cutters at one time. This insures a uniform depth of cut, for if the hide is thicker'at one point than another the springs D are correspondingly depressed, the bars a preventing the extra thickness from being removed by the cutters.

When the machine is to be used for level ing hides, the springs D are forced toward,
and maintained at, a certain determined distance from the cylinder, corresponding to the required thickness of the hide, by a bar, 0, adjusted by an eccentric, P, or otherwise.
The guide-bars n, rollers N, and bar 0 can be readily applied to the machine illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
I claim as my invention- 1. A leather-dressin g machine in which are combined a cutting or scraping cylinder, 0, and a series of independent springs, D, arranged to bear directly upon the hide, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
