My present invention pertains to means for fastening in closed position the side curtains of automobiles and it has for its object to provide means embodying upright rods and appurtenances whereby aside curtain may be strongly fastened in closed position in such manner as to effectively exclude wind.

To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvementas hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming partof this specification z- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of an automobile equipped with two of my novel curtain rods.

Figure 2 is a side elevation showing the rods and side curtains in use.

Figure 3 is a vertical cross-section illustrative of the improvement.

Figure 4 is a fragmentary detail on an enlarged scale and hereinafter explicitly referred to.

Figure 5 is aperspeot-ive showing one of my novel curtain rods as an article of manufacture.

Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the vie vs of the drawings.

The automobile body is designated by 1 and is provided at 2 with male fastener members.

The automobile top is designated by 3 and is shown as provided with a skirt 4: on which are male fastener members designated by 5, said male fastener members 5 extending laterally inward from the skirt f as shown in Figures 3 and 4;.

The side curtains are designated by 6, and each is provided near its upper edge and near one of its vertical edges and at its inner side, Figure 4:, with a tape 7 by which is carried a female fastener member 8. At this point I would have it understood that the fastener members alluded to are of the well known snap type though they may be of any other type compatible with the purpose of my invention without involving departure from the scope of my claimed invention.

There are two of my novel curtain rods 9 employed at each side of the automobile. Each of the said rods 9 is preferably formed of a single piece of metal which has apertures 10 adjacent to its ends, and is equipped at intermediate points of its length with-out- 1924. Serial :No. 708,529.

in the practical application of the curtain rods 9 at the side of an automobile the lower apertured portions of the rods are placed over the fastener members 2 before referred to and the upper apertured portions of the roos are placed over the fastener members 5 on the skirt 4 of the top 3, after which the female fastener members 8 are snapped into engagement with the male fastener members 5. In this way the rods 5) are secured in position, and may be main tained in such position irrespective of whether or not the curtains 6 are employed.

hen the curtains 6 are to be employed the lower female fastener members 13 of the curtains are snapped into engagement with the fastener members 2, as shown in Figure 2, and the female fastener members 12 of the curtains are snapped into engagement with the fastener members 11 of the rods 9, while the upper portions of the curtains are mounted on the male fastener members 5 of the top skirt 4 after which the rods 9 and the tapes 7 with the female fastener members 8 are relatively arranged as shown in Figure 4:, the said members 8 being snapped into engagement with the male fastener members 5 as illustrated,

In this connection it will be understood that the curtains rest at the outer sides of the bars 9, and the upper portions of the cur tains rest between the bars 9 and the inner side of the top skirt 4.

With the parts relatively arranged as just described it will be manifest that the curtains will be effectively protected from wear and tear, and at the same time the curtains will be maintained in closed state in such manner that wind will be effectively ex cluded from the interior of the automobile, and this even when the automobile is proceeding against a strong wind.

Notwithstanding the practical advantages of my improvement, it will be manifest that the same is simple and inexpensive in construction and is susceptible of being expeditiously and easily applied to automobiles such as at present in use.

I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relativearrangement f the parts em raced n tb 'pr n and pie ferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear, and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changes and modifications may be made such as fall Within the scope of my invention as defined by my appended claim.

Having described my invention What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:-

In a vehicle, the combination of a body, a top, a curtain rod apertured adjacent to its ends and having male fastener members at intermediate points of its length, male fastener members on the body and top and extending through the apertures in the rod, a curtain having female fastener members clet-achably engaged with the male fastener members on the body and rod and also hav ing an aperture receiving the male fastener member on the top, a female fastener member receiving the said male fastener member on the top, and a tape attached to the curtain and carrying the last-named female fastener member.
