Description

Patented June l, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
ROBERT W. SCOTT, OF BABYLON, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO SCOTT AND WILLIAMS, INC., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION F MASSACHUSETTS.
SEAMLESS STOCKING.
Application filed July 17, 1923. Serial No. 652,070.
My invention relates to the construction of seamless stockings which are knit upon circular knitting machines, the object of my invention being to so knit the stocking that the high spliced portion above the heel will be more perfectly finished than when formed by the ordinarymethod.
In the accompanying drawings Figurel is a side View of a stocking embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear View of the same.
Assuming that the stocking is knitted from the top to the toe on a circular knittin machine, the leg A is knitted with round an round knitting in the usual manner down to the point where the high splice is to' begin, indicated by the line :1J-m, I employ a knitting machine which has one ofthe wellknown split foot mechanisms of a reciprocatory character, and when this line wis reached, this reciprocatingsplit knitting mechanism is thrown into operation, so as to knit the front half of the stocking, by one set of cams 0n one half of the needles and to knit the rear halffof the stocking on another set of cams on the other half of the needles, there being such an arrangement of the two sets of needles that sutures S (Fig. l) of,
the courses of knitting thus formed Will be produced at the opposite sides of the stocking. I may refer to the Paquette Patent 985,927, March 7, 1911, as an illustration of a machine for thus producing what is termed split foot knitting.
At the same timethat this part of the split knitting is being produced I cause the machine to supply an additional reeenforcing thread to a portion only of the rear half of the circle of needles to form the high splice, so that as this portion of the stocking is being produced during reciprocating action, and the splicing thread is thus being knitted into the body of the fabric in the successive courses, backwards and forwards, the edges 5 e of the re-enforced portion or high splice will be selvages, instead of the usual loose ends which are found in the high splices of circular knitl stockings Where floating threads left by the high splice formation have to be cut oli'.
This invention is especially useful where it is desired to form a taperlng high splice as indicated at H in the drawings. In that case, in knitting from top to toe, mechanism is provided whereby when the high splice line -m is reached, the splicing thread is fed at first toa few of the needles and then in later courses to a gradually increasing number of needles until nearly half the total circle of needles is supplied. The result is 60 that the splicing thread is knitted into successive courses on both backward and forward motions without leaving any floating threads, and the edges e ofthe relenforce are selvages in the body of the fabric, back of the sutures H, producing a finished appear\ ance of the high splice. 5
The knitting of the heel 5 and foot 6 andv toe 7 of the stocking may then be proceeded with in any desired or suitable way With any desired yarns, and with or without split foot construction, as at S', as may be preferred. The manner of forming the foot of the stocking forms no essential `part of my present invention.
Although my improved stocking is knitted seamless, it may be provided with an imitation or ornamental seam at the back, or else- Where, as desired.V
. I claim as my invention l. A seamless stocking having at the back above the heel a high splice formed* of areenforcing thread, the stocking havingsutures at opposite sides in the same courses with the high splice, which has selvage edges back of the sutures. i
2. A seamless stocking having at the back above the heel a tapering high splice formed of are-enforcing thread, and with selvage edges, the stocking having sutures at the sides in the same courses with the high splice, but in advance of said selvage edges.
In' testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
ROBERT W. seoTT.
