APPARATUS FOR CONDITIONING AND COOLING YARN.
Application filed .Tune 13, 1925. Serial No. 36,974.
19 Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of a yarn drier, showing the loca tion of the retarding bar and the nozzle; and
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2-2, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, 1 is the casing of a drier. 2, 2 are an endless chain. 8, 3 are transverse sticks from which the hanks oi yarn a are suspended. a are longitudinal angle bars within the drying chamber and 5 are cross bars, which are so located as to be in the path of the lower portions of the hanks of yarn a, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. These retarding bars are preferably of wood and are reinforced by angle bars 6, which extend from one angle bar 4- to the other. Other means of supporting the retarding bars may be employed without departing "from the essential features of the invention.
In general practice, it is desirable to lo cate the sticks .3 as close together as pos sible. The hanks of yarn on one stick are in contact with those on adjoining sticks so that, in conditioningthe yarn, it is almost impossible to subject the entire series of hanks on a stick to the action of a moisture supplying device. By providing the retarding bars 5, the lower portions of the hanks of yarn, suspended from the sticks. are held back to form an opening Z) between the released hanks of yarn and the one engaged by the retarding bar. Under this opening is located a spraying device. 7, which consists of a cylinder 8, which has a series of nozzles 9. This cylinder is connected to a steam supply pipe 10, in the present instance. Connected to the cylinder 8 is a drip pipe 11 for carrying off any water of condensation that may accumulate in the cylinder.
Instead of steam, hot or cold water can he used. In the latter instances, the water is sprayed by means of air under pressure.
The operation is as follows: Hanks of yarn are placed on the sticks in the usual manner, and are carried through the drying chamber of the apparatus by chains, which are driven at a comparatively slow speed.
In order to condition, or moisten, the hanks of yarn while in the moistening compartment of the drier, the hanks of yarn, as they pass the retarding bar 5, are held back in order to form the opening Z). As the spraying device is located in front of the bar 5, the steam escaping from the spraying device is projected against the sides of the hanks of yarn, moistening, or conditioning, all of the hanks on a particular stick.
As the conveyer moves forward, one hank of yarn after another is released from the retarding bar, which opens another series of hanks to the action of the jets of steam. v
When this mechanism is located in a conditioning compartment of a drier, then cold or warm water is projected through the medium of compressed air, instead of steam.
I claim 1. The combination in an apparatus for conditioning and cooling yarn, of a conveyer from which the hanks of yarn are suspended; a retarding bar located in the path of the lower ends of the hanks of yarn for opening up the yarn as it is conveyed through the apparatus.
2. The combination in an apparatus for conditioning and cooling yarn, of a conveyor from which the hanks of yarn are suspended; a retarding bar located in the path of the lower ends of the hanks of yarn for opening. up the yarn as is conveyed through the apparatus; and a device for spraying moisture onto the, sides of the hanks of yarn at the opening.
3. The combination in an apparatus for conditioning and cooling yarn, of a casing; a conveyor from which the hanks of yarn are suspended; a transverse retarding bar located in the path of the lower porions oi the hanks of yarn suspended from the conveyer; and a transverse cylinder having nozzles through which the fluid is projected to moisten or condition the yarn.
4. The combination in an apparatus for conditioning and cooling yarn, of a casing; conveyer chains at each side of the casing; transverse sticks mounted on the chains are from which the hanks of yarn are suspend ed; a transverse retarding bar located in the path of the lower ends of the hanks of yarn so as to retard all of the hanks of yarn suspended from a single stick; and means for projecting sprays of fluid onto the sides of the yarn on each side of the opening "formed by the retarded hanks of yarn.
5. The combination in an apparatus for conditioning and cooling yarn, of a conveyer from which the hanks of yarn are suspended; a retarding bar in the path of the free ends of the hanks of yarn; and a steam spraying device so located as to spray steam onto the sides of the hanks of yarn retarded by the bar.
