Application filed December 12, 1924, Serial No. 755,540, and in Sweden June 11, 1923.
This invention relates to an improved device for grinding the tightening surface around door holes of steam boilers and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of said kind which is simple in construction and convenient and reliable in use.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts more par ticularly described herebelow with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing illustrating one embodi ment of my invention Fig. l is a front elevation of the grinding device, partly in section, on line AB of Fig. 2, and a guide plate supporting the same. Fig. 2 is a view from above of the grinding device and its supporting plate showing in section the wall of a superheater box. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the grinding device and a portion of a superlieal'er box. Fig. l is an enlarged section on the line al4; of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing l designates a guide plate formed with an opening 2 the shape of which corresponds to the opening around which the tightening surface is to be ground in the present case the door hole 3 of a superheater box Bearing against each side of the guide plate 1 is a bar 5 and 6. Between these bars a sleeve 7 is provided, the length of which slightly exceeds the thickness of the guide plate 1 around the opening 2. Through the said sleeve 7 and corresponding openings in the bars 5 and (3 is inserted a sleeve 8 bearing by means of a flange 9 against the outer side of the bar 5 and having a screw-threaded portion 8 on which is provided a nut 10.
By means of this nut and the sleeve 8 the 1 bars 5 and 6 can be pressed against the ends of the sleeve 7. The sleeve 7 is formed with a radially extending rod shaped projection 7 which is surrounded by a spring 11 bearing at one end against the sleeve 7 and at the other end against the bottom of a recess 12 0f a semicylindrical member 12 formed with lateral pins 12 which slidably engage slots 5 and 6 of the bars 5 and 6 respectively. The said spring 11 is adapted to keep the sleeve 7 and the semicylindrical member 12 in engagement with opposite sides of the opening 2 of the guide plate 1. The projection 7 of the sleeve '7 and the spring 11 pass through a hole of a bolt 13 (Fig. l) inserted througl'i correspending holes of the bars 5 and 6. The said nut 23 has miter screw threads and on the same is screwed a nut 29- and a locking nut 30. It will be easily understood that by ti'irning the nut 29 in one direction the nut 28 will be rotated in such direction as to move the ball bean ing 26 and thus the shaft 19 to the right in Fig. 3, whereby the grinding disc 20 may be brought in contact with and pressed against the wall of the box l. lVhen the shaft 19 has been adjusted the nut 23 may be locked by means of a locking nut 38. Surrounding the enlarged portion 19 of the shaft 19 is a socket 31 which is kept in position by means of a nut 32 pressing the said socket against a shoulder 29 of the nut 29. Outside the enlarged portion 19 of the shaft 19 the latter has a portion 19 of square shaped cross section adapted to be connected to a flexible shaft the cover of which is adapted to be secured to the socket 31. The bar 6 is provided with two handles 33 by means of which the grinding devices may be manipulated as described herebelow.
In the construction form shown in the drawing the guide plate 1 may be kept in position during the grinding operation by means of a cross shaped body 34 which is inserted through a door hole of the superheater b0 ad acent to that door hole, the
7 wh ieh ised tightening surface of which is to be ground. The arms of said body are pressed against the inner side oil the wall of the snperheater box 4 by means of a screw bolt having outside the guide plate 1 a nut 36. Three set screws 3? bearing against the outer side of the superheater box t are used to de termine the distance between the guide plate 1 and the box A} and also to adjust the guide plate into a position exactly parallel with the wall of the superheater box.
lVhen the grinding device has been placed in the position shown in the drawing and the shaft 1?) put in rotation the b and 6 are by means of the handles and moved in such manner tha the grinding disc is carried along the edge of the open ing 2. As the spring 11 always keeps the sleeve 7 and the member 12 in contact with the edge of the hole 2 even when the bars 5 and 6 talie up a diagonal position in relation to the opening 2 the manipulation of the grinding device is very easy and convenient.
I claim 1. A device for grinding the tightening surface around door holes oi steam boilers and the like, comprising a guide plate having an opening of the same shape as the door hole to be ground, bars bearing against opposite sides of the guide plates, a bearing supported by said bars, means incliuling the bearing connecting the bars to each other, a rotary shaft mounted in said bearing, a grinding disc carried by said shaft, and means to maintain the bearing in proximity to the periphery of said open- 111g.

A device of the character described, comprising a guide plate having an opening therein, bars on opposite sides of the plate, a bearing supported by said bars, means including the bearing connecting the bars, a sleeve surrounding the bearing within the opening, means connected with the sleeve to maintain the bearing in proximity to the periphery of said opening, and means whereby the bearing is moved around the openmg.
A device of the character described, comprising a guide plate having an opening therein, bars on opposite sides of the plate,
a bee g mounted in said bars, means including the bearing connecting the bars, a sleeve surrounding the hearing within the pening, a slide bearing against the periphery of said opening, and a spring interposed between the slide and sleeve whereby the bearing is yieldingly held in proximity to the periphery of the opening.
4:. A device of the character described, comprising a guide plate having an opening therein, supports on opposite sides of the plate, a bearing mounted in the supports, means connecting to supports and bearing, a sleeve surrounding the bearing Within the pening, a radial extension on the bearing, a slide interposed between the extension and the periphery of the opening, and a spring surrounding the extension and abutting 1st the slide and sleeve, whereby the latis held in contact with the periphery of the opening.
