REPEATING FIREARM.

. This invention relates to firearms and more particularly to take-down repeating firearms having tubular magazines.
The objects of this invention are to feed cartridges simply and efficiently from the magazine to the cartridge chamber, to improve the means forloading the magazine and locking the trigger in safety, and to prevent accidental release of the take-down bolt.
These objects are attained by pivotally attaching to the breech bolt a cartridge carrier having a portion adapted toengage a cartridge entering from the magazine. Means are provided to tilt the carrier during the rearward movement of the breech bolt to lift the cartridge into alignment with the cartridge chamber. The safety lock comprises a pivoted member having a por tion adapted to directly engage the trigger. The magazine comprises aslot-ted tubular member surrounded by a sliding slotted sleeve. A cartridge follower is mounted in the tubular member and is provided with a pawl adapted to project through the slot. On the sleeve is provided means to engage saidpawl to move the follower when the sleeve is moved to allow loading. of the magazine. Engaging one end of the take-down bolt is a. spring operated latch to maintain the bolt in operative position.
Referring now to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a side elevation partially in section of a gun embodying the invention, with the breech closed, and Fig. 2 is a similar view with the breech open. Fig. 3 is a section of the magazineand Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the breech bolt A receiver 10 supports a barrel 11 from its front wall. A breech bolt 12 is reciprocatively mounted in the receiver and is operated by the forearm 1.3 through the medium of the action rod 14. A locking bolt 15 which seats in the socket 16 in the top wall of the receiver maintains the breech bolt in breech closing position. The locking bolt, breech bolt and action rod are associated in the mannerdisclosed in the patent to Swebilius et al. No. 1,110,837. granted September 15, 1914, so that when the breech bolt is in breech closing position, the locking bolt is moved into or out of locking position by a slight forward or rearward movement of i the action rod.
mounted in the receiver and has a portion 18 cooperating with the action rod and a lug 19 cooperating with a shoulder 20 on the hammer-21 to prevent unbreeching of the gun until after the hammer has fallen and to prevent the release of the hammer until. after the gun is completely breeched all according to the disclosure in the aforementioned patent. A hammer spring 22 provides the driving force for the hammer 21 and a trigger 23 engages a shoulder 24: on the hammer to hold the latter in cocked position.
A cartridge carrier 25 is pivotally mounted in a socket in the under-portion of the breech bolt and has a hook portion 26 at its forward end. In the front wall of the breech bolt is a groove 27 which decreases in depth from the bottom to the top of the breech bolt. This groove is adapted toreceive the head of a cartridge and act as a guide for the cartridge. A tubular magazine is carried by the receiver and barrel and is arranged to deliver cartridges in positionto be engaged by the hook 26. At the rear of the carrier is a portion 29 adapted to engage the base of the locking bolt 15. and another portion 30 adapted to engage the lug19 on the sear 17 during the reciprocation of the breech bolt incident to reloading the gun.
In the trigger 23 is cut a socket 32 in whichis adapted to seat a shoulder of the safety lock 33 whichis pivotally mounted in a slot in the trigger guard 34. A spring 35 maintains the trigger in or out of trigger engaging position, The member 33 is so positioned that it maybe easily operated by the hand grasping the stock of the gun.
The magazine comprises a slotted tube 36 havingone end fitting in an aperture in the front wall of the receiver, the upper wall of the aperture being oblique upwardly. A plug 37 in the other end of the tube 36 is attached to the barrelby the screw 38. An aperture 39 is provided for inserting cartridges into the tube 36.. A slotted sleeve 40 isslidably mounted on the tube 36. A cartridge follower l1 is mounted in the tube 36 and a pawl 42, provided with a lug having an oblique surface, is pivoted'in a slot in the follower and projectsthrough the slot in tube 36.
