RUG-DISPLAY RACK.
Application filed January This invention relates to display racks and more particularly to racks fordisplaying rolled rugs in upright positions.
An object of this invention is to provide "1 a rug displayrack in which a platform is rotatably supported upon a stationary member through the interposition of anti-fria tion devices, and incorporating means to prevent the operative dislocations of the supporting member and rotatable platform when the device is being moved from place to place.
Another object of this invention is to provide my display rack on which rolled rugs can be supported in upright positions and slightly tilted towards the supporting member to aid in stabilizing the rugs in their supported position.
A further object of this invention is to n tu able platform comprising` reinforcing means and these reinforcing means also providing rug-receiving recesses for the reception of the lower end of the rolled rugs when in this supported position,
It is also an object of this invention to provide'a rug-display rack of generally improved construction, whereby the device will be simple, durable and inexpensive in construction, as well as convenient, practical, serviceable and efficient in its use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com-` i bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of Y the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, with out departing from the spirit of the invention. i

Referring to the. drawings thereI is shown a stationary member in the form of an annular base 10` having an annular' V-shaped race-way 11 formed therein for the reception of anti-friction devicesl or/ ball l2 which are held in spaced relation by a spacing ring 13. rlfhe ring 13 rides on'i'lat horizontal surfaces 14 formed at the upper edges of the race-way and opposed inner and outer vertically disposed annular flanges 15 are formed on the annular base 'lOv and extend upwardly from-the flat sum faces 1a tok form `an annular lubricant receptacle 16. Spaced legs 17 extend downwardly from the annular base 10 to provide supports therefor to enable the `device to be .rigidly supported on a supporting -floor F 1n which there may be, slight irregularities. A hub 18 is formed at the axis of the annular base 10 and is connected to the base 10 by radialarms j19, and an axially dis posedaperture 2O is `formed inthe hubl A rotatable member is provided and includes a circular platform 21` of uniform thickness and having an annular flange 22 extending downwardly from the periphery thereof'` The under face of the rotatable platform 21 has an annular V-shaped raceway 23 formed thereon and operably engages the balls 12 in order to rotatably support the platform upon the annular base 10.
lt is highly desirable to have the rotatable platform as light as possible and therefore peculiar reinforcements are provided in order that the entire platform may be cast relatively thin and at same time have sufficient strength to withstand all stresses to which the device would ordinarily bey subjected. To thisend the central portion of the platform is offset as indicated at 24, and from this point the offset portion extends radially to the periphery of the platform thereby providing offset reinforcing ribs or members 25, and opposed arcuate recesses 26 are formed in the opposed longitudinal edges of the offset ribs 25 to engage the peripheral portions of the rolled rugs R, thereby forming a scat for the lower end of the rugs when placed upright upon the platform 21.
By this arrangement the entire Lipper surface oi' the platform 21 is formed with a uniform thickness and at the Sametime reinforcements arer provided which also form seats for the lower end ofthe rugs.
A hub or sleeve 2T is formed at the axis of the platform 21 and this hub receives a tubulaifshaft 28 which is secured to the hub 2T by transversely extending' bolts or other lsecuring devices 29, while a supportingmember 30 is carried at the upper end of this shaft. rlrhe supporting member 30 comprises an axial hub 31 suitably secured to the shaft and from this hub radial arms 32 extend, which arms have opposed arcuate recesses 33 formed in the opposed longitudinal edges thereof and these recesses are in approxivmately vvertical alinement with the recesse 26 formed on the reinforcing ribs 25 of the platform 21. Helical springs or other flexible elements 3l are secured to the central portion of the supporting member 30 and engage the peripheral portions of the rolled rugs to hold them in their upright positions, the outer ends of the springs being detachably secured to lateral extensions 35, formed at the outer ends of the radial arm 32, by means of hooks or similar securing means 36. In order to relieve the springs 34 of someV stress in holding the rings R in their upright position, the opposed recess 26 formed in the reinforcing members 25 are spaced further vapart that the opposed recess 33 of the arms 32, thereby causing the upright rugs R to tilt slightly towards each as shown in Figure 7, which position obviously relieves the springs Bllvof considerable stress while supporting these rugs and consequently obviates the possibility of the rugs falling from their supported position.
A bridge plate 37 is secured to the lower terminal of the platform hub 27 by screws or other securing' devices 38 anda threaded axial aperture 39 is formed therein for the reception of the threaded end of a bolt or other securing device 40. The Vshank of the bolt l0 is smaller in diameter than the aperture 2O and extends therethrough beyond the lower face of the base hub 18 and an enlarged head or stop member ll1 is formed at the lower end thereof, which stop member is larger in diameter than the aperture 20.
In use the plat form is normally rotatably supported upon the base 10 by the antifriction balls 12, and in this position and the securing device Ll() does not engage the base member, but merely floats within the aperture 2O of the base hub, so that no friction is created between the stationary base and the rotating platform. However if it is desired to move the entire raclr from place to place, the platform is then lifted until the legs 17 of the base 10 disengage the floor or supporting surface F. In this position, the enlarged head or stop member -ll of the bolt lO engages the hub f8 of the base 10 and supports the base 10 in such relation to the platform 21. as to prevent the anti-friction member 12 from moving from their housed position between the opposed race-ways 11 and 23, which position is shown in Figure 2. Then the rack is again placed upon the ioor F the head l1 of the bolt llO disenga-ges the base hub 18 and the platform again freely rotates upo'n the balls 12. This feature is highly advantageous in that it permits the rack to be readily moved about the store without giving attention to the base 10, but prevents friction between the rotating platform and this base when the rack is in operating position.
Vhat is claimed as new is:
1. A display rack including a stationary member, a rotatable member, anti-friction means interposed between the stationary member and the rotatable member to rotatably support the rotatable member upon the stationary member, a securing device carried by one of the said members and positioned to engage the opposed member when the rotatable member has been moved from operative engagement with the anti-friction means thereby securing the stationary member to the rotatable member, said securing device arranged to disengage the opposed member when the rotatable member operably engages the anti-friction means.
2. A display rack including a stationary member, a rotatable member, anti-friction means interposed between' the said members to operably support the rotatable member upon the stationary member, means for permitting the rotatable member to be moved fromv operative engagement with the antifriction means, and means for securing the stationary member to the rotatable member when the rotatable member has been moved from operative engagement with the antifriction means.
3. A display rack including a stationary member, a rotatable member, anti-friction means interposed between the said members to rotatably support the rotatable member upon the stationary member, and securing means for securing the stationary member t'o the rotatable member when the rotatable member has been moved from operative engagement with the anti-friction means, said securing means releasing the stationary member when the rotatable member operably enlOO lll)
gages the anti-friction means thereby permitting free rotation of the 'rotatable member upon the stationary member.
4. A display rack including a stationary member, a race-Way carried by the stationary member, a rotatable member, a race-Way carried by the rotatable member, anti-friotion devices positioned between the said race-Ways to rotatably support tlie vrotatable member upon the stationary member, a securing device carried by one of the s aid members and extending through an aperture ormed in the opposed member, said aperture being larger in diameter than the securing device to prevent engagement of the securing device with the Wall of the aperture when the rotatable member is operably supported by the antiffrction device, and a stop carried by the securing device and positioned to engage the member in which the aperture is formed when the rotatable member has been moved from engagement With the anti-ieriction devices, thereby securingl the stationary member to the rotatable member to prevent the displacement of the antifiiriction devices relative to the said members.
