UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE PHILLIP OOON, OF CANTON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR TA'PERING SPOKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,681, dated January l2, 1875; application filed December 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PHILLIP Coon, of Ganton, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Tapering The nature of this invention relates to the construction of a machine for cutting the necessary bevel, or otherwise finishing or trim# min g the tenons of spokes for wheeled vehicles, whereby much time and labor are saved. This invention consists in a table or bed, to which is connected an inclined frame, provided with guides, in which works a slotted sash or gate carrying a cutter-blade, and connected to a hand-lever by a friction-roller in a manner to give the knife a drawing motion, whereby the danger of splitting or otherwise injuring the corners of the spoke during the operation of cutting is avoided.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my invention;
Fig. 2, a plan view of the same.
A represents a bed or table, having upon its upper surface slots, in which work adjustable guide-pins or screws a a. Upon this bed" or table are rigidly connected guide-plates b c, the guide-plate c serving as a rest, against which the shoulder of the spoke is placed while being operated upon by the knife. Connected to the side of the bed A is a frame, composed of guide-arms C G', and supported by a brace, D. The guide-arms O C are connected to the bed or table at their lower ends by suitable screw-fastenings, and in relation to the bed or table A at a sufficient angle to give the knife the desired drawing motion, and thus prevent splitting or injuring the corners of the spoke. Working in these guidearms 0 C is a sash or gate B, to which is secured a knife or blade, E. This sash or gate B has a horizontal slot, in which a friction-roller, d, works, the same being connected to the hand-lever F by screw e. This handlever is connected to the lower end of the shorter guide-arm O of the frame.
Such an arrangement, in addition to giving the knife or blade' a long drawing motion, will admit of the easy removal of the sash or gate B, and knife E, if at any time the knife should require sharpening or repairing.
In the operation of this machine the spoke is placed at an angle resting against the gage or guide pins a, ct, so that the shoulder of the spoke will strike against the plate c under the knife. The knife E is then brought down by the hand-lever F upon the end of the spoke with a long drawing motion, cutting the wood lengthwise, and thereby avoiding the danger of splitting or injuring the corners of the spoke.
In the removal of the sash or gate B it will be only necessary to disconnect the hand-1ever from the fram e, and the sash or gate with the knife can be slipped out of the lower part of the frame.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a machine for Atapering or finishing the ends of spokes, the combination of the bed or table A with the inclined guide-arms O O', slotted sash or gate B carrying knife E, roller d, and hand-lever F, the whole constructed to PHILLIP OOON.
