INDICATING NUMBER AND PLATE.
Application filed September 21, 1925. Serial Ho. 57,627.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in an indicating number and plate, and has for its object, the provision of a plate carrying indicating numbers, adapted for use as a house number and the like.
The invention is designed primarily to be made from metal, although other material may be used, if desir d. It is an object of the present invention, to provide a number bearing plate having numbers mounted thereon, the outer face of which projects outwardly beyond the outer surface of the plate, so that a polishing or shining of the numbers may be effected easily and quickly without disturbing the outer surface of the plate.
Another object of the present" invention is the provision of a number bearing plate of this class having numbers mounted there on in such a manner that the numbe may be easily and quickly removed and replaced, so that the plate, itself, may be used with various numbers.
Another object of the invention is the pro vision of a number bearing plate of this class, having a flange formed on the rear ward side and a boss on the forward surface for protecting the fastening means used with the plate from the elements.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood from a reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification and in which,
Fig. 1 is a, front elevational view of the invention,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on substantially line 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on substantially line 3S of Fig. 1.
As shown in the drawings. the invention comprises a plate 7 having an outwardly projecting flange 8 around the edges thereof. This flange terminates in a beveled or in clined surface 9 and the inner surface of the plate 7 is provided with a flange 11. Projecting outwardly from the outer surface of the plate 7 are spaced bosses 12, adapted for the reception of the head of screws 13, or other fastening means, which may be projected into the supporting surface 13, upon which the plate is mounted. After the plate is mounted on the supporting surface, as
shown in Fig. 2, by means of the screws 13, or other fastening means, a plug 14: is inserted into the bosses 12 by a pressfit, so that access of the elements to the head of the screw 18 is prevented. As shown in Fig. 2, when the plate is mounted upon the supporting surface 13, the flange 11 will engage the supporting surface. When the fastening means 13 are driven properly into the supporting surface 13, this flange ll'will serve to conceal the inner surface of the plate 7 against the elements. Mounted on the plate '7 are numbers '15, these numbers preferably being made of metal and secured by lscrew '16 projected through the plate from 1 1' the rear side thereof. lhe outer surface of the plate 7 is preferably treated with rustprooiin'g material, so to" prevent its rustmg or tarnishing, background for the numbers or indicating media 15, which are mounted on the plate 7.
I prefer to form the plate 7 from brass or bronze, or some other material which will take a lustre. I also prefer to form the indicating media 15 out of brass or bronze, so that the outer surface of the indicating media may be polished to stand out clearly on the back ground furnished by the plate 7. It Wlll be noted from Fig. 2 and Fig. 8, that the thickness of the numbers is greater than the height of the flange 8, so that the outer faces of the numbers or indicating media 15 may be polis ied by rubbing, without necessitating a polishing of the outer surface of the flange 8.
This structure is a desirable feature of the lnvention, inasmuch as it permits quick and easy polishing of the outer surface of the indicating number, which would indicate that the numbers were individually polished with considerable labor to a casual o- .ver.
The method of attaching the numbers to the plate is also desirable, inasmuch tne plate 7 may be made .1 large quantities and the numbers desired attached according individual requirements.
While I have illustrz ted and described the preferred form of structure, I do not wisn and affording a suitable prising a supporting plate; marginal flange projecting outwardly from the outer face thereof; a marginal flange projecting outwardly from the inner face, thereof; a pair of spaced bosses projecting outwardly from the outer "face having an opening formed in registration with an opening in each of said bosses, the openingin each oi said bosses being slightly larger than the opening insaid plate, said opening in said plate being adapted for the reception of fastening means; a plug pressed into saidiho for concealing the fastening means projected through said opening, said inner iace flange engaging the supporting member upon which inounted; the inner surface of said plate being spaced from said supporting member, the depth of said boss and said flange on the uter of said plate being equal and indicating ineans inonntedon the outer face of said plate, said indicating ineans being of greater thickness than the depth of said tiange on said outer face. i' i M Q. A device of the class described, comprising a supporting plate ac'la pted for of said plate; saidplate mounting on a supporting surface; a pair oi spaced bosses projecting outwardly from the outer face of said plate and having an openingiforlned therein in registration with an opening formed in said plate, the opening in. said boss being slightly larger than the opening in said plate; means for attaching said plate to said supporting surface; ineans insertalole in said bosses for concealing said attaching means; a flange projecting outwardly from the rear face of said plate, said flange engaging said supporting surface andiretal nin said plate in spaced relation thereto; indicating means detac'hably lllOtllliable on said plate; means insertalole through said plate from therear face thereof for aifixingsaid indicating means on said plate, the inner end 01 said aiiixing means lying in the space separating said plate and said supporting surface; aiinarginal flange on the outer face of said plate said flange being ot less depth than the thickness o l' said indicating nieans Y I In test-irnony whereoi, I have signed the e e iae- ERROLL JAMES NALLS.
