MOLECULAR VACUUM PUMP.
Application led February 20, 1926. Serial No. 89,531.
This invention relates to pumps for deriving a high vacuum, particularly those of the rotary type.
l The general object of the present invention is the provision of a pump construction which will be effective to obtain a high vacuum with increased efficiency.
Other and further objects will be pointed out or indicated hereinafter, or obvious to one skilled in the art upon an 'understanding of the present disclosure.
`In the drawingA forming a part of this specification are presented two illustrative' structures embodying the invention, but it is intended that the invention may take other and divers forms all within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing,
Fi 1 is a face view of the rotating pump mem er,
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of one pump construction, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of another pump construction.
AFor an understanding of the invention reference may be made immediately to the illustrative forms wherein reference characl so t sectional area from the centre outwardly.
ter a designates a rotating disc provided with spira flanges a to form intervening channel ways b. The top margins of the flanges a are all in a common plane but the bod portion of the disc is slightly dished liat the channel ways decrease in cross On the frame s is formed the pump housing p in which the disc ais mounted for operation bein h of an e ectric motor, said shaft being supported in the bearings k.' Mounted Within the' pump housing p for contact -with the -top margins of the langesais the stationary disc c which affords an axial conduit d for admission of air to the space between the dis'cs. `housing portion g in which is supported the stator of the motor, said housing being hermet1ca'lly closed bythe casing cover g. The pump housing aords the outlet e from the channel k which circumscribes the circumference of the disc a; The disc c. is
preferably made of a suitable selflubricatcarried on the shaft of the rotor' The frame sfcarries'the motora means for maintaining the ldesired contact between the vflanges a and the disc c, the rotor L maybe displaced to a slight extent oli' of the magnetic centre position of the ield, in an axial direction away from the disc a, so that the\ magnetic pull of the iield will be effective to urge the disc (L towards the disc c. The lconduit tl is connected with the receiver, and the outlet c with the primary vacuum pump.4 The entire pump and motor casing is hermetically tight, thus permitting the desired freedom of play in the bearings k.
In the embodiments shown in Fig. 3, the disc a is supported on a vertical axis instead of a horizontal axis, and provided with a cover .plate .m in lieu of the disc o. The cover plate m has a tubular axial extension m which projects into a circular channel 1' in the bottom cover plate, said( channel being lled with mercury to pro-- vide a hermetic seal, the weight of the disc a and the rot-or having Support on a 'thrust What we claim isf- 1./A pump, including two discs, one" of which has a .plane surface, and the otherof which is spirally grooved and has a conl cave surface in the grooves and a plane sur-v face between the grooves, which latter surface is in contiguous association with the plane surface of the first described disc. 2. A pump, including two discs, one of which has a plane surface, and the other of which has a number of spirally extending flanges which vary in height from the center tothe ,periphery of the disc and terminate outwardly therefrom in coplanar surfaces for' contiguous association witlrthe plane surface of thevfirst described disc.
3. A pump, including two discs, one of which is stationary and has a plane surface, and the other of which is rotatable and has. a number of 'spirally extending ico Aflanges which vary in height from the center to the periphery of the dise and terminate outwardly therefrom in coplanar surfaces for sliding, Contact with the plane surface of the first described disc.
4; A pump, including two relatively rotatable discs between which is formed a spirally extending channel-way, means for rotating one of the discs, and means tending to press the discs together during such rotation.
5. A pump, including a rotating centrifugally -acting conveyor having a drive shaft, a hermetic closure for the conveyor and shaft, and an electric. motor having the rotor portion thereof mounted on the shaft and the stator portion thereof mounted on the 1 gally acting conveyor having a drive shaft,
a hermetic closure for the conveyor and shaft, and an electric motor having the rotor portion thereof mounted on the shaft and the stator portion thereof mounted on the inside of the closure in axially oii'set relation to the rotor.
In testimony whereof We have hereunto subscribed our names at Zurich, Switzerland, on the 28th day of January A. D. 1926.
FRANC/01S MAURON. OSKAR SEITZ. J ULIUS JONAS.
