UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
EPHRAIM D. STACEY, OF GORSICANA, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENTIN COMBINED CISTERN TOPS AND FILTERS.
Specitication forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,605, dated January 12, 1875,' application led To all whom it may concern! Be it known that I, EPHEAIM D. STACEY, of Corsicana, in the county of Navarro and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Gistern Top and Filter; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Thenature of my invention consists in the construction of a covering for cisterns, which has combined therewith a ilter and all the necessary appliances for convenience, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar View with the cover removed. side view, and Fig. 4 a vertical section of the same.
A represents a disk of cast-iron of other suitable material, and of any desired size, to rest upon the top of the arch or mouth ofthe cistern. Out of the center ot' this disk is cut an opening in circular form, less a segment ot one'i'ourth the circle, which opening` is for the purpose of receiving the conical-shaped filter B. In that part of the disk which forms the segment mentioned is a small aperture, a, for the insertion vof the pi'pe or stock of a pump. Z) b are staples, inserted in the disk A opposite each other, as shown. The h'lter B is made of cast-iron or other suitable material, in the shape of an inverted cone or funnel, with one side at, so that it may iit the opening in the disk A. The edge of thelter is flared for the purpose of resting on and being supported by the disk. The bottom of the iilter is perforated, as shown, along about two-thirds of Fig. 3 is a July 9, 1874.
the sides toward the top, for the purpose of allowing the water to escape from the pipe conveying the Water into the cistern'. The cavity of the cone or filter is to be lled with charcoal or other suitable filtering substance, through which the water running from the roof through the pipe may be filtered for purifying the water. On the inside of the filter and opposite each other are handles d d, for lifting the lter from its place when necessary to clean it or replace new charcoal. The cover is made in two parts, C and D, hinged together on a rod, 7L, the ends of which pass under the staples b b. The part C of the cover has an opening, t', of suitable size to receive the water-pipe from the roof.
The part D may be turned back for the purpose of receiving waste water from the pump, the spout of which should be placed directly over this part of the cover.
This cistern cover and filter is cheap, easily manufactured, and durable, and it may be applied to any cistern without much expense.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to. secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the disk A, provided with opening a and staples b b, the conical perforated filter B, and the cover C D, having' opening i, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 26th day of May, 1874.
EPHRAIM DOUGLASs STAOEY. [n s.] In presence of- SAM. R, FROST, WM. CRoET.
