CHARLES F. GESCHICKTER, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
WINDOW-SCREEN MOUNTING.
Application filed April 3,
The object of my invention is to provide a mounting for a window screen whereby the screen may be moved in its grooves readily, and whereby the screen may be removed from the grooved strips irrespective of its elevated position in said grooves or slideways; and with these and other objects in view, my invention consists of the parts and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window with my improved screen in position.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of a screen side stile with my invention in. position.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view through a side stile of the screen.
Figure 4: is a side elevation of Figure 3, the housing being in section. 1
The reference numeral 1 designates a suitable window frame to the sides of which are secured suitable slideways 2 on which the screen frame 3 slides. said screen frame having at one side slides in the form of pins 4: which project into the grooves of the slide ways 2.
The side stile 5 of the screen frame 3 is rabbeted as at 6 along its entire length, pin openings 7 being formed through the stile 5 and opening into said rabbet 6, there, preferably, being two of such openings.
A pair of springs 8 are secured in said rabbet and properly spaced apart, said springs having elongated slots 9 at each end in which the fastening devices 10 are positioned. Secured to each of these springs is a pin 11 constituting a slide adapted to engage the slideway on the window frame.
The cam 12 is suitably mounted in the rabbet 6 and is provided with a rod 18 and operating handle 14. which ope-rating handle projects through a slot in a cover plate, 16, which cover plate houses in the rabbet 6 so that all parts are concealed with the exception of the handles 14; which project through said slot 1.5.
In mounting the screen in the window frame the handles M- of the respective cams 12 are pulled closely together whereupon the springs 8 are free to exert their power to draw the pins 11 inwardly flush with the outer face of the screen stile 5, whereupon 1924. Serial No. 704,049.
the pins 4: on the opposite side of the screen are inserted in their respective slideway and the screen frame brought in flush whereupon the handles 14 are pushed from each other thereby forcing the cams 12 on to the springs 8, thus depressing the springs and projecting the pins 11 into their respective slideway, and the cams are held in this position against accidental displacement by reason of the frictional contact between the springs 8 and said cams.
With the majority of screens in use it is necessary when removing them for the season, or for the purpose of washing the windows, to slide the screen the entire height of' the slideways and frequently the screen becomes overbalanced and slips from the operators hands and falls to the ground and is damaged.
By my invention it is not necessary to slide the screen at all in order to remove it because all that is necessary in order to remove it is to draw the handles 14 toward each other by the fingers of one hand, thereby pulling the cams 12 from operative contact with the springs 8 whereupon the springs are free to exert their power and pull the pins 11 from their slideway after which the screen frame is moved outward slightly and pulled to one side thereby removing the pins 4 from their respective s'lideway whereupon the screen is free to be removed.
lVhat I claim is:
The combination with a screen frame, hav ing one side stile rabbetted, a slide, ports through the bottom of said rabbet opening through the inner side face of said stile, pins movably mounted in. said ports, a spring connected to each of said pins and tending to hold the pin in retracted position and flush with the outer face of said stile, a cam mounted inoperative position with respect to each spring, a rod connected to each cam,
the free ends of said rods being in close proximity to each other, an operating handle connected to each rod and extending through the inner face of said stile, and a housing covering the rabbet and having an elongated slot through which the said handles project.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
CHARLES F. GESGHI CKTER.
