Description

May 25 1'926.

UNHTE STATES KENELM CHASE WINSLOW, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
GARTER.
Application filed August 25, 1925. Serial No. 52,303.
The present invention relates to improvements in garters of the limb encircling type and adapted for temporary attachment to the stockings or hose of the wearer. The garter of my invention is particularly adapted for use by wearers of roll-top stockings or socks, and is designed specially for use in connection with the roll at the top of the stocking or sock for the purpose of retaining the hose in correct position with comfort to the wearer and for lending an attractive ornamental effect to the stocking.
The invention contemplates the use of two elastic encircling bands for retaining the garter and stocking or sock in correct position, located above and below the roll of the hose, and an intermediate annular webbing or cover adapted to encase the roll of the stocking for insuring its correct shape. The garter as a whole is preferably covered with a casing of ribbon or similar finishing material, which may be shirred or otherwise ornamented in appearance to enhance its neatness and esthetic value.
"' The invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts as will hereinafter be more fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a preferred example of the physical embodiment of my invention wherein the parts are combined and arranged according to modes I have thus far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a garter embodying my invention which is provided with a casing of shirred ribbon or other suitable material.
Figure 2 is a detail plan view of a portion of a garter structure wherein the two elastic retaining bands are joined by an open-work intermediate portion adapted to enclose the roll-top.
Figure 3 is a sectional view as at line 4-f of Figure 2 showing this type of garter in use.
In the drawings I have illustrated a. portion of a stocking as S with the customary roll-top indicated as B. As shown in Figure 2 two spaced annular bands 5 and 6 are employed between which is located an intermediate web 7 of greater diameter than the bands.
As seen in the drawings the two spaced r elastic bands are designed ,to encircle the limb, one above the roll in contact with the limb, and the other below the roll in contact with the stocking.
In this manner the two spaced elastic bands provide effectual means for retaining the stocking and the garter itself in correct position to avoid wrinkles in the stocking, and the intermediate web 7 of the garter which joins the two bands retains the rolled top of the stocking in correct shape and position.
To add to the esthetic value of the garter the whole may be provided with a casing 4 as in Figure 1 wherein a shirred ribbon casing is shown, or if desired other materials may be used having various ornamental colors and features. The casing is fashioned with the required fullness so as not to interfere with the elasticity or resiliency of the garter in the performance of its functions.
The spaced elastic retaining bands 5 and 6 are made of rubber, and are joined by an integral, intermediate webbing 7 of preferably thinner material and fashioned with an open work design, rendering it more elastic than the bands 5 and '6. This intermediate webbing, which is flexible and of greater diameter than the two retaining bands forms a cover of tubular shape for enclosing and neatly fitting over the roll-top R as in Figure 3, and a casing for the garter completes its structure as indicated in Figure 1.
From this description taken in connection. with my drawings it will be apparent that the two spaced retaining bands and the intermediate roll-top cover provide effectual means for maintaining the hose and the rolltop thereof in correct position with comfort to the wearer. The two bands provide a com- Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- A garter comprising an elastic member having edge strips formed of circular rubber bands, open Work sections of rubber connecting said edge strips and integral there- With and extending transversely therebetween, said sections being of greater diameter than said bands to house thereunder the 10 rolled edge of a stocking with one of the edge strips disposed beneath the roll.
In testimony whereof I ELlfiX my signature.
