Application filed. February 18.. 1925. Serial No. 10,061.
The present invention relates to improve ments in the type of iiexible closures having flexible strips or stringers ycarrying interlocking fastening-devices and a sliding cam p device for moving said fastening devices into and out of interlocmng engagement. Forms of such a structure are shown.4 in earlier applications, Ser. No. 682,022, filed December 21, 1923 and Ser. No. 724,355,
n@ tiled July 5, 1924:. rllhe invention o1 the present application comprises an improved form of cam. slider for operating the fasten ing devices, and an improved latching device for securing the slider against movement.
.In order that the invention may be fully understood it will first be described with reference to Vthe accompanying drawings and afterwards jpointed out more particularly in the annexed claims.
n@ y lln said drawings: y
'Figure 1 is a front elevation of a flexible closure embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the combined latchv plate and pull member in open position extended above the slider;
Figure 3 is a similar view with the comloined latch plate and pull member extended below the slider in position i'or opening the closure; V y
Figure d is an edge elevation of the device with the Vparts in the position shown in f'Figure 1;
.Figure 5 is a similar view with the parts in the position shown in Figure 2;'
.35 Figure 6 is a lower end view of the slider in the position shown in Figure l;y and Fi re 7 is a-detail plan view taken on the line 7-7 of Figure 6. p
,1n the type of nexible closure tol which en the present inventionrelate's, vtwo exible strips or stringers f1, 2 are formed at their inner edges with beads or thickened portions 3 upon which are 4secured interlocking fastening devices. A
Each'interlocking fastening device is preferably formed with a U-shaped yoke` 10 'i embracing and compressed upon the beaded or thickened edgey 3 of a exible Stringer, va narrow neck 12, a forked hook 13, and the il@ opposite riding lugs or shoulders 15. The
specic form and operation of the fasteni ing devices of the preferred construction will be more fully understood by reference to tlf-hg above ynamed application Ser. No. 724,- o
The operating cam slider lis preferably constructed as set forth in the above named application Ser; No. 724,355 of a back-plate 20 and a fore-plate 21 mounted in spaced relation upon a binderpost 22. The inner faces of the lback-plate and `fore-plate are providedwith controlling grooves 25 separated by a central guide ribv 26. rllhe riding lugs of the fastening devices operate in the controlling grooves 25.
It will be observed thatthe upper edges of the back-plate and ore-pla 21 are cut out or recessed at between the central longitudinal part of the'slider and the outwardly daring wings containingthe diverging upper portions of the grooves 25. 1t willbe understood that in the operation of thek slider of this type upon the described fastening devices, the fastening devices are controlled 'in their movements into and out of locking engagement by the riding lugs 15 sliding in the grooves 25. The' recesses 30 in the back-plate and fore-plate or the slider provide free space for the movement of the bifurcated hooks of the fastening devices vas they re directed into the open upper 1ends of the slider channels. In eii'ect the laterally diverging wings or sides oi' the 'back-plate and fore-plate containing the upper ends of the controlling grooves 25, are extended a little beyond the edge walls of their supporting members, thereby giving the controlling grooves a chance to get each fastening device under accurate control before the hooks can come in contact with an edge wall.
35 is a swivel plate freely pivoted upon tains the latch and pull member in closed position upon the swivel plate.
The free endof the latch and pull member 38 is also provided with an. inwardly presented bifurcated or two-part detent 45 adapted to straddle the lug 46 on the lower edge of the fore-plate 21. This two-part detent 45 closes over the lower open ends l devices against either downward or upward displacement.
It will be observed that the detent of L@latch plate 38engages the fastening devices this closed interlockin of t while the latter are engaged or interlocked, so that the strain of the' slider latch will be firmly `resisted by the co-operative strength of the 'fastening devices. 'lfhis ar` rangement entirely obviates the defect of some prior devices in which a slider locking device engages individual fastening devices in disengaged position. The bifur- Vcated detent 4:5 in straddling the lu v/i serves to prevent lateral movement o the swivel plate 35 and the parts are held in position by the engageinentof the snap ip 40 with the member 38 at 39.
The improved slider having recessed upper edges to preventinterference with the interlocking members in the locking motion andthe novel form of slider locking device which cooperates with the riding lugs of the fastening devices are of importance in simgllisfying and improving the construction type of flexible closure.
It will be understood that the broad idea of the combined latch plate and pull member hingedto a swivel plate is covered by our above named application, Ser. No. 7 24,- 355, but that the specific details of the improved form of this latch plate and pull member with its detent directly engaging interlocked fastening devices are claimed in the resent case..

controllin grooves engaging said riding lugs or' oulders and Vthereby* positively controlling the movements of the fastening de vices, the upper ed es of the slider walls b emg recessed and the grooved wall) portions projecting beyondsaid recesses to control said fastening devices without interference with the slider walls.`
