Application filed September My invention relates to industrial trucks and cars.
It is the object of my invention to provide an industrial truck with a stationary platform and one or more sectional platforms or decks adapted to be removed entirely or to be nested horizontally or substantially vertically, for facilitating loading and unloading of the truck. For instance, in plants manufacturing heavy articles such as cement blocks, the workmen cannot lift the cement blocks located on one side of the truck and place them on the far side of one of the platforms, as the near side of such platform makes it difiicult for him to reach the far side with such a heavy load. I have, therefore, devised a construction by which a portion of the decks may be moved out of the way without the necessity of removing it entirely from the truck.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective of my truck with the uppermost platform collapsed;
Figure 2 is an end elevation showing the ar 'angement of the platforms in expanded and telescopic condition;
Figure 3 is a plan view of a typical arrangement of platforms and their guideways when in expanded position.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 11 indicate the side rails of the bottom platform, and 22 the end members. Cross members 3 are provided, and over the frame members are laid the material supporting strips 4:. This platform is mounted on the usual trucks, generally designated 5, of any desired character.
The corners of the platform are provided with angle iron corner posts 6 and reinforcing brackets 7 Above this bottom platform constituting the base of the truck may be located any number of platforms which will be referred to as decks. In the present instance, I have illustrated two such decks, each comprised of two units 8 and 9, composed of side members 10, end members 11 and cross braces 12, the corners being reinforced by plates 18. Supports consisting of angle iron brackets 14 secured on the inside of the corner posts 6 and extending across the ends of the truck receive the deck unit 8. Similar supports 15 are secured between the corner posts 6 in a plane above the supports 14: and receive the other deck unit 9. It will thus be seen TRUCK AND CAR.
10, 1925. Serial No. 55,475.
that the deck unit 8 is located below the deck unit 9 for the purpose of sliding said units from one side of the truck to the other to facilitate loading of the platform or deck below by nesting said units.
The manner of mounting the supports for the deck units necessitates one unit, in the present instance the unit 8 being a little shorter than the other unit 9, which permits the units to be placed on edge or nested substantially vertically as shown in Figure 1, when it is desired to give complete access to the platform or deck below'for loading or unloading purposes.
It will be realized that my invention is adaptable to varying uses and varying arrangements which I desire to comprehend within the scope of my claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z- 1. In a truck, a platform, a plurality of sections adapted to compose a platform, means to guide said sections, whereby the sections may be nested one under the other without being removed from their guiding means.
2. In a truck, a platform, a plurality of sections adapted to compose a platform, means to guide said sections, whereby the sections may be nested one under the other, said guiding means being located at different elevations to permit of the nesting without being removed from their guiding means.
3. In a truck, a plat-form, a plurality of sections adapted to compose a platform, means to guide said sections, whereby the sections may be nested one under the other said guiding means being located at difierent elevations to permit of the nesting, and said guide ways being located different widths apart, the sections for the respective guide ways being of different lengths so that the sections may be moved to one side of the truck and nested substantially vertically.
4. In a truck, a running gear, a truck frame, corner posts, a plurality of guide ways carried by said corner posts at either end, and platforms composed of a plurality of sections adapted to be moved from side to side of the truck and to be nested one under the other without being removed from their guiding means.
5. In a truck, a running gear, a frame, a
stationary platform thereon, corner posts disposed vertically at the corners of said frame, guide ways located on said posts above said first mentioned platform, said guide Ways being arranged in pairs, each pair having different distances between its respective members and each pair differently elevated, sectional platforms of dill'erent lengths mounted thereon whereby said sectional platforms may have the sections 10 moved from one side of the truck to the other and may nest said sections horizontally or substantially vertically.
In testimony whereof, I afiiI-I my signatnre.
SHERXVOOD M. CHASE.
