Description

"FME, .5.
Hardman Angood Good Jeux AHofnqq Patented May 18, 1926.
UNIE!) STAT PENT LATCH.
Application iled October 24, 1924.
rlhis invention relates to latches of the spring bolt kind and in particular to the bolt and its operation.
ln the existing kinds ot latch the latch body has mounted on it a knob Which on being` turned draws in bolt rods to the end of which is attached a spring,` bolt. @ne oi' the faces oit the bolt end is made at present bevelled so that when the door is being closed this bevelled tace may contact with another bevelled iiace on the door jamb `titting` which causes the bolt to slide back prior to entering,` the socket in the jamb. This is a detect inasmuch an appropriate tool such as a gimlet can be inserted to press against the bevel tace and force it to with draw 'from the socket thus unlocking the latch, NOW by my invention l overcome this detect and make it impossible for the bolts to be Withdrawn by the use of a tool. rlhis is etlected according to my invention by the apparatus hereinafter described.
In 'the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention Figure l is a plan View of the latch body and jamb fitting in the locked position, Figure 2 is a sectional ele vation ot the parts shown in Figure l, Figure 3 shows the movable catch and attachments according to my invention, Figure 4 is an end elevation of the latch body showing the catch slot according to my inven-4 tion with the bolt in Withdrawn position, Figure 5 is a sectional elevation of the latch body showing the bolt in the Withdrawn position.
Referring to these drawings instead of the usual bevel ended bolt l provide a bolt l with a substantially square or fiat end l, rlhis square ended bolt can not when protruding' 'from the latchet body be moved back by contact with the door jamb so as to enter the socket in the same way as the bevel ended bolt operates. Consequently special means are required to enable the square ended bolt to be Withdrawn from and enter the socket and these means accordin` to my invention comprise a mov Serial No. 745,547.
able catch or lever 2 adapted to act in coV operation with the squared end la of bolt l. One end ot the catch 2 is pivoted on a pivot pin 3 Within a bracket d which is secured by pin 5 to the latch body as shown. This catch 2 is normally pressed down by a spring 6 so that a notch or corner 7 about midway of the catch 2 engages a pin 8 lit ted to the rear end of bolt 1 and so holds the bolt l in the Withdrawn position compressing springs 9 on bolt rods l0. The movable catch 2 protrudes through a slot 1l in the iront end of the latch body alongside the bolt end its end l2 being enlarged so as to come in contact during the Working of the latch With a pin 18 made adjustable 'to ensure such contact and litted to the door jamb fitting lll.
ln operation to open the door the knob l5 is turned withdrawing the bolt rods 10 and bolt l. The spring 6 presses the catch 2 so that the notch 'l' engages the bolt pin 8 and holds the bolt l in the Withdrawn position see Figure 5. 0n closing the door the enlarged end l2 o't' catch 2 comes automatically in contact with the adjust-able pin 13 of the jamb hitting` 14C which pin raises the catch 2 clear of the bolt pin 8 releasing` the bolt l which is then forced out into the socket in the jamb by the compressed springs 9.
l claim:
ln a latch, the combination with a latch body, of a spring` pressed square ended bolt reciprocable in said body, a pin projecting from a lateral tace ot the bolt, an elongated catch pivoted to said body in a plane parallel to and at one side ot the plane ot reciprocation of the bolt, said catch having.;` a notch intermediate its ends to engage said pin, an enlargement at the end of said catch opposite the pivoted end, and an adjustable pin with which said enlargement cooperates in the Working ot the latch.
ln testimony whereof he athxes his signature.
HARDiw/AN ALLGOOD GOOD.
