'1 a Pass TOY DUMP CAR.
Application filed. March 2, 1925. Serial No. 12,607.
This invent-ion relates to new and useful improvements in toy dump cars, and more particularly to the type of toy dump car illustrated and described in my Unlted States Letters Patent No. 1,497,865 granted June 10th, 1924,
It is the principal object of my invention to provide for a toy dump car of the above type, a dump body which will be automatically tilted to discharge its contents when the car is bumped by another car or by a toy engine.
In the accompanying drawings illustrat ing my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a track and dump car mounted thereon provided with my automatically tiltable body. Figure 2 is an end View of the same showing the car body be fore it has been tilted. And Figure 3 is an end view thereof, showing the car body in its tilted position.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a detailed description of the form of embodiment of my invention illustrated therein, the numeral 1 designates a toy car frame mounted upon front and rear trucks 2 and 3 respectively which travel upon a track at. Secured to the inside part of each end member of the car frame 1, is an arched sup porting member 5. The two supporting members 5, 5 are formed at their top middle portions with holes which receive the Each end of this shaft 6 is formed with a hole beyond its respective supporting member 5. Firmly secured within the hole in the front end of the shaft 6 is a short restraining pin 7, and through the hole in the rear end of said shaft a cotter pin 8 is inserted. This cotter pin may be easily removed to permit the shaft 6 to be withdrawn from the supporting members 5, 5.
Slidably mounted upon the shaft 6 between the supporting members 5, 5 is the bottom middle portion of a concaved body member 9 which is free to be tilted about the shaft 6 as an axis from its horizontal load carrying position shown in Figure 2 to its inclined load dumping position shown in Figure 3.
The car body 9 is permitted a substantial longitudinal movement upon the shaft 6 between the supporting members 5, 5 for a purpose now to be described, Formed or otherwise secured on the legs of the front arched supporting member 5, near its apex, are two lugs 10, 10 which extend rearwardly in a horizontal manner to sustain the car body 9 in a horizontal or load carrying position. The car body 9, however, is free to move along the shaft 6 a sufficient distance toward the rear supporting member 5 to clear the lugs 10, 10. hen the car body slides on the shaft 6 beyond these lugs 10, 10, it will automatically tilt around the shaft as an axis to the inclined load dumping position shown in Figure 3.
Any impact such as that of a car or an engine against the rear end of the car when its dump body 9 is in a horizontal position with its front ends resting upon the lugs 10, 10, will be sufficient to cause said body to slide rearwardly on the shaft 6 to clear said lugs, and thereby to cause said body to be automatically tilted as above described. Secured to the rear truck 3 of the car is a female coupling member 11 which when bumped by a male coupling member 12 of another car or of an engine, will impart a sufficient shock to the car to jolt the car body 9 off of the lugs 10, 10 on the front supporting member 5 to automatically tilt said body. It is thus seen that my improved dump body may be automatically tilted to discharge its load whenever the car supporting it is bumped by another car or an engine.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A toy dump car comprising a frame and supporting wheels therefor, supporting members projecting upwardly from the front and rear ends of the frame, a horizontal shaft supported by said upwardly projecting members, sustaining means on one of said members, a dump body tiltably and slidably mounted upon said shaft and adapted at one end for engagement with said sustaining means, and free to be disengaged therefrom when the car is bumped, for the purpose specified,
2. A toy dump car comprising a frame and supporting Wheels therefor, supporting members projecting upwardly from the front and rear ends of the frame, a horizontal shaft supported by said members, a pair of lugs projecting inwardly from one of said supporting members, a dump body tiltabiy and slidably mounted upon said shaft and adapted to rest at one end upon said lugs, and free to be moved clear of the latter along the shaft when the car is 10 bumped, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto my hand this 26th dav of February, 1925.
MILTON S. DUNKELBERGER.
