J. BIRO METAL FORMER Filed sept. 20. 1924 m www @f/QM@ stares n erica.
JOHN BIRO, OF NEU? YORK, N. Y.
'METAL FORMER.
Application filed September 20, 1924-.
For a detailed description of the present form of my invent-ion, reference may be had to the following specification and to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof, wherein Figure l is a plan of my device;
Fig. 2 a `diametric section thereof;
Figs. 3 and 4L show details.
My invention resides in a former for manufacturing rings of sheet metal from straight fiat strips.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a die-block of cylindrical form with its bottom part shaped to be received in a vise or otherwise mounted in a suitable standard. The upper corners vof this block are shaped, as shown at b b Fig. 2, to conform to the molded outline of the ring which it is desired to produce. Fig. lshows an example of such a ring. At one. point in the periphery of the block is radially pivoted a grip-lever E. It is pivoted in a recess in the top face of the block and its upper sur.- face is flush with said face and carries a section of its molded corner at Z). At the molded point the grip-lever is slightly thinner than the recess which contains it, leaving a small space G into which one end of the blank H may enter. The lever seats on a smaller spring K which prevents sticking and gives a yielding upward pressure of the lever against the blank at the start of the shaping` operation.
A rotating die-lever C is journaled centrally on the block by means of the bolt B. On one side of lever C is a recess R for the reception of the removable die-member D which is shaped on its under side to conform to the molded surface b of the die-block. This die-member D is shown separately in Fig. 3, its rear end being formed to iit firmly yet easily in the socket on lever C formed by the aforesaid recess R. The molding or grooving on the under side. of the die-meinber is widened out, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, to provide for the gradual entry of the blank into it.
The operation is as follows z-A blank H, shown by dotted lines in Fig. l, and consisting of a strip or ribbon of metal, has one end inserted in the space G beside the grip- Serial No. 738,980.
lever E which is then brought down to secure the strip. The strip is then bent over the top face of the lever and extends therefrom tangentially to the die-block as indicated in Fig. l. Assuming the die-member D to be in place in its socket R on lever C, the lever will be rotated in a clockwise direction around bolt R until member D engages the downturned end of strip H. Then, by the continued rotation of lever C, the strip will be bent and shaped between the two parts of the die, until it is of the form shown in Fig. 4l after a complete rotation of the lever.
*What claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A. metal former of the character described comprising a die block having its top provided with an annular shaping surface, means forming part of said shaping surface for anchoring one end of a blank below the plan-e of said shaping surface, a die carrier mounted to travel over said shaping surface, and a die supported by said carrier and cooperating with said shaping surface.
2. A metal former of the character described comprising a die block having its top provided with an annular shaping surface, a grip lever pivote'd to said block and having a portion of its upper surface constituting part of said shaping surface, a die carrier mounted to travel over said shaping surface, and a die supported by said carrier and cooperating with said shaping surface.
3. A metal former of the character described comprising a die block having its top provided with an annular surface having a transverse recess therein, a grip lever pivoted tosaid die block and extending through said recess, said lever being narrower in width than the recess and having a portion constituting a part of said shaping surface, a die carrier mounted to travel over Said shaping surface, and a die supported by said carrier and cooperating with said shaping surface.
4l. A metal former of the character described comprising a die block having its top provided with an annular shaping surface having a transverse recess therein, a
grip lever pivoted to; said die block and eX- tending through said recess, said lever having :L portion forming a continuation of said shaping surface bridging the space formed by said recess, a spring yieldably supporting said lever, a die carrier mounted to travel over said shaping surface, and a die supported by said carrier and cooperating with said shaping surface.
Signed at New York city, county and 10 State of New York, this 19th day of September, 1924.
