Description

J. B. TEESDALE PUMP Filed Feb. 25, 1923 JOHN B. TEESDALE, 0F GRAND RAPDS, MICHIGAN.
PUMP.
Application filed February 23, 1523.
rlhe present invention relates to pumps; and its object is, generally, to provide a ro tary pump improved in certain respect:l hereinafter appearing, and more particular ly to provide priming means for pumps of this character.
rlhis and any other objects hereinafter appearing are attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the structure hereinafter particularly described and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a transaxial sectional view of a rotary pump;
Figure 2 is an axial sectional view thereof taken on line 2 2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail transaxial view of parts of the same, showing a modilied construction; and
Figure fl is a detail transaxial view of certain parts, showing another modified construction.
ln the drawings, a rotary pump is shown, comprising a body 1 having a cross-sectionally circular chamber 2 horizontally dis posed axially, a passage 3 having an intake and a port l to the lower portion of said chamber, the pump comprising also a crosssectionally circular piston 11 in, and diametrically smaller than, the chamber and in axially parallel relation therewith. Means are provided for travelling this pis'- tion about an axis parallelly olfset from the pistons axis, i. e., in such manner that the axis of the piston moves in such travel in a circle whose center is the axis of the chamber, the pumped liquid being thus forced circularly in the chamber by the snugly fit ting relation of successive portionsv of the pistons periphery with the chambers circular wall.
ln the construction illustrated, said means comprise the driving shaft 13 coaxial with the chamber and carrying the eccentric cam member 12 therein on which cam member the piston is turnably mounted. A closure 7 extends transversely of the passage 3 and through the port 4, in spaced relation from said ports sides, and is littingly connected swingably to the body 1 at Serial No. 620,759.
8 and to the piston 11 at 10. This port l is at a lower level than the bottom of the pas* sage 3 toward its intake 5, so that when the pump is not operating, a sufcient amount of liquid for priming its next operation may be retained in the port l at the intakeside thereof. This priming operation is insured by closures middle portion being denessed below its connections 8 and 10, thus forming a pocket for holding the priming liquid.
lt will be seen that the rotation of the driving shaft 13 in the direction of the arrow in Figure 1 draws the liquid into the chamber 2 through the port e at the side thereof which is toward the intake 5 and expels the liquid through said port as its opposite side which is toward the vent 6 of the pump.
ln the modified construction shown in Figure 3, the closure 71 has a projection 20 adapted to close the space 21 between the piston 111 and the inner surface of the chamber at the port l1 when the piston moves away therefrom.
ln the further modified construction illustrated in Figure l, a packing sheet is applied to the pistons perimeter and held in grooves 23 therein by binding strips 2li,
l claim: n
1. ln a structure of the character described: a body having a cross-sectionally circular chamber horizontally disposed axially, and a passage having an intake and a port to the lower portion of the chamber at a lower level than the bottom of the passage toward its intake; a cross-sectionally circular piston within, and diametrically smaller' than, the chamber, in axially-parallel relation therewith; means for travelling the piston about an axis parallelly offset from its axis; a closure extending transversely of the passage and through, and in spaced relation from the sides of, the port and litt-ingly connected to the piston and the body.
2. In a structure of" the character described: a body having a cross-sectionally circular chamber horizontally disposed axially, and a passage having an intake and a port to the lower portion of the chamber; a Cross-seotionally circular piston Within, and diametrieally smaller than, the chamber, in axially-parallel relation therewith; means for travelling the piston about an 'axis parallellT offset from its axis; a closure extending transversely of the passage and through, and in spaced relation from the sides of, the port, and fitting-ly eonneeted to the piston and to the body and having a portion intermediate, and depressed below, Such connections.
In testimony whereof l alif; my signature.
JOHN B. TEESDALE.
