W. W. BLAKELY STAKE PLATFQRM FOR TRUCKS Filed May l?, 1924 Patented May 11, 1926.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM W. BLAKELY,
F DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
STAKE PLATFORM FOR TRUCKS.
Application led May l2, 1924.
This invention relates to truck platforms and more particularly to platforms having stakes or uprights to assist in retaining a load on the platform.
The invention consists in the structural features and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings :-*r
Figure l is a plan Viewl of the improved platform Figure 2 is a side view of the same;
Figure 3 is a cross section on line 3h3- of Figure l.
In these views the reference character l designates a platform which may be formed of boards or the like and 2 a pair of sill members underlying said platform, the latter being nailed or otherwise secured to said sill members. The sill members may be formed by boards or planks arranged on edge, and are preferably spaced inwardly slightly from the sides of the platform. Load retaining or stake members 3 of an arch form are spaced lengthwise of the platform, their cross connections lbeing transverse to the platform. Preferably said load retainers are formed from pipe connected by standard elbows 3. l designates socket openings in the platform l wherein the lower ends of the stake members 3 may be inserted. Said openings register with transverse notches 5 in the sills so that the lower ends of the stake members enter said notches and rest upon the bottoms thereof. To resist any side thrust to which the stake members are subjected in use, strips 6 are extended upon the outer faces of the sill members 2 covering the notches 5, said strips being secured to said sill members by bolts 'l'. Sheet metal plates 8, extending across the notches 5, provide seats for the heads of said bolts, and further reinforce the sills aga-inst any weakness which might otherwise be due to said notches.
Serial No. 712,727.
The essential feature of the described construction 1s the simple and inexpensive arrangement `whereby sockets are formed for engagement by the lower ends of the stake members, the sills 2 being adapted to primarily form these sockets as well as supporting the platform l.
While the stake members at each side of the described construction are disclosed as cross connected to form arched units it is evident that the stakes or uprights at the two sides of the platform may be entirely independent if desired.
` hat I claim. as my invention is l. In a device of the class described, the combination with a platform, of a stake extending through the platform, a sill entending substantially the full length of the platform having a recess in the upper edge thereof extending transversely thereof from one side to the other adapted to receive said stake, and means for resisting side thrust to which said stake may be subjected including a strip on one side of the sill closing one end of the recess, a plate upon the opposite side of the sill member closing the opposite end of the recess, and a common means for securing said strip and plate to said sill.
2. In a device of the class described, a pair of sill members having transversely extending recesses therein, a platform resting on said sill members having openings registering with said recesses, stakes extending through said openings and resting on the bottoms of said transverse recesses, and means cooperating with the walls of said recesses to form sockets for the stakes and to resist side thrust including strips cooperating with said sills for supporting said platform.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
WILLIAM W. BLAKELY.
