From the respective boxes E9 parallel tubes D10 extend rearward and downward to the tops of vertical junction boxes E10 in the rear of the boiler. From the bottom of respective boxes E10 parallel tubes D11 extend forward and upward to hrorizontal junction boxes E11 in the front of the boiler.
From the respective boxes E11 parallel tubes D12 extend rearward and downward to the tops of junctionfboxes E12 of approximately double the depth of the previously specified vertical boxes occupying higher positions.
I boxes E13 parallel tubes D11 extend rearward and upward to angle'boxes E1l1 connecting them with the upcasts D15, the tubes D1A1 thus extending through open spaces beneath boxes vE1o and above the bottoms of the elongatedy boxes E12.A
The tubes D2` have the baliie F disposed thereon so as extend from their rear ends .forward say two-thirds of their length and the tubes' D11 have the baffle F1 disposed thereon so as to extend ,from their forward ends rearward say two-thirds of their lengths. The upiiow tubes D13 and D14 are in the primary combustion chamber Gr, subject to the hottest condition of the gases, which flow from thefprimary combustion chamber through the passage between baflies F1 and F in contact with the tubes therein and thence into contact with lhe drum C.
It will now be seen that this arrangement provides an extended course for circulating Water back and forth through the heating zones with correspondingly extended heating surfaces. The general downward flow of the water is modified so thatit vis required to entrain the steam.' 'Ihe steam or steam and water are `caused to flow upward through the bottom tubes and the tubes connecting them with theupcasts, with resulting avoidance of trapping, inducement ofvrapid circulation, prevention of overheated tubes, and provision vfor better heating. i
Having described my invention, I claim:
l. In a downflow steam boiler, a water circulating and steam generating element having a set of serially arranged tubes disposed in vertical rows and comprising oppositely inclined bottom tubes, each forming the lowermost tube of a vertical row.
2; In a downtiow steam boiler, the combination with a steam and water drum, of a water circulating and steam generating element having a set of serially arranged tubes forming'a plurality of vertical rows and comprising opposite-ly inclined bottom tubes each forming the lowermost tube of a vertical row, a down-flow tube connecting said drum with an upper tube of said element, and an up-flow tube connecting said drum with the higher end of one of'said bottom tubes.
3. In a steam boiler, a water circulating and steam generating element having a set of seriallyarranged tubes disposed in vertical rows and comprising upper tubes which are similarly disposed `and through which flow is alternately upward and downward and bottom tubes which' are reverselyrdisposed and through both of which flow is upward. Y
4c. In a steam boiler, the combination with a steam and water drum, of a water circulating and steam generating element having a set of serially arranged tubes disposed in vertical rows and comprising similarly disposed upper tubes through which the flow is alternately upward and downward and oppositely inclined bottom tubes in which the flow is upward, a downflow passage connecting said drum with an upper tube of said element and an uptlow passage connecting said drum with the higher end of the last lower tube.
5. Ina steamk boiler, the combination with a steam and waterdrum, of a downtake, a junction box connected with said downtake, a plurality of steam generating and water circulating elements connected2 with said junction box, and upcasts` through which the respective elements discharge to said drum, each of said Velementscompr'ising a set of tubesoonnected in series by vertical junction boxes at one end thereof and horizontal junction boxes at the other end thereof, the two' vlowermost ktubes of the series being connected and inclined in opposite directions, so as'to secureupward flow therethrough to said upcast.
6.
