ELECTRIC HEATER.
Application filed August 25, 1923. Serial No. 659,295.
, My invention relates particularly to electricheaters of the portable type adapted to the dual purpose of heating and cooking and it has for its object to eliminate certain defects of devices of this nature heretofore known and at the same time reduce the cost of manufacture and facilitate assembling.
To this end my invention consistsof the particular construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
For full comprehension, however, of my invention, reference must be had to the accompanying drawings in which similar ref erence characters indicate the same parts, and wherein:

The preferred embodiment of'my invention consists of two parts hinged together to serve either as a standing closed heat radiator, an oblique open foot warmer or a fiat topped double element cook stove.- Each part consists of a pair of decorated filigree plates'2 forming two sides of a chamber, the side which serves as the top of the stove being presented by a plate 3 uniting the side plates by flanges 4 fastened to the side plates by screw bolts and nuts 5 and forming one side of a sub-chamber 6, the other sides of which are presented by flanged segments 7 and a disc or plate 8 preferably asbestos. This sub-chamber contains the refractor 9 in which the heating element 10 is carried. The connection of the refractor in place is by a pair of screw bolts and nuts 12, the bolts being passed through the refractor and through one of the flanges 13 of the angular segments and through the asbestos disc 8, the nut clamping these parts together and the surface of the asbestos being protected by washers 14. The asbestos disc is cut away as at 15 to expose a pair of binding osts 16 mounted in the refractor and havmg the opposite ends 17 and 18 of the ele' re 3 is a side elevation with some of ment connected thereto while one of these binding posts is connected by a lead 19 to one of the switches 20, the other switch, 21, being similarly connected to one end of the element of the other part of the heater. The other binding post is connected by a lead to the element in the other part of the heater by means of a similar binding post similarly mounted in the other refractor. A porcelain terminal block 27 is mounted on the lnside of the filigree side plate near the last mentioned binding post and has an integral bushing 28 projecting through the side plate. The main lead cable 30 from the source of electrical supply epters through this bushing, one lead being connected to the adjacent binding post 16 and the other to a binding post 31 on the terminal block which is connected to one of the terminals of the switch 20 by a lead 33. This terminal is connected to the corresponding terminal of the switch 21 by a lead 35, these leads 25 and 35 which are common to the two parts of thehcater, therefore, of necessity, pass out of one of these parts into the other in order to enable these leads to have freedom of movement to asume different positions to accommodate heater in their hin ed relation. The subchamber containing the refractor and the various leads just described as well as the porcelain terminal block are enclosed and protected by an angular housing plate fitted in place and formed to present a flat middle portion and oblique end portions 41 and 42, when fitted in place the end portion 41 engageslwithin a lip 43 on the top plate 5 while the opposite end engages against the plate 5 in the vicinity of the inner end of a lip 44 on the plate 5 near the hinged end of the heater parts, the middle portion of the plate resting on supporting lugs 45 to which the plate is connected byscrews 46;
The oblique end 42 of this plate has a pair of move freely over the wires when itis necessary or desirable to open the heater by removing screws 46 and detaching and swinging back plate 40 thus exposing practically the change of position of the parts of the v Operation.
Then in use as a heater the parts are closed together and stand on the legs 60. When used as a foot warmer the parts are swun two-thirds open or to an obtuse angle and tien rest on these legs 60 and the feet presented by the buttons 20 and 21. When opened out flat the heater presents a twoelement stove. a
To inspect the internal connections the screws 46 are removed and the plate 40 swung down to position thus exposing the internal parts. v What I claim is as follows 1. A. combination electric heater and stove consisting of two parts hinged together each part comprising a pair of side plates, a combined side and top plate secured to and connecting together the said side plates, the last mentioned plate having a middle open ing, a pair of flanged segments upon the underside of. the last-mentioned plate and coinciding with the opening therein; a heat insulating disc or plate covering the space enclosed by the segments thus forming a chamber; a refractor containing a heating element and carried within the chamber; means securing the refractor in place; means housing the sub-chamber; and ,means for connecting the elements of the respective refractors to a source of electric supply.
2. A combination electric heater and stove consisting of two parts hinged together each part comprising a pair of side plates, a combined side and top plate secured to and connecting together the said side plates, the last mentioned plate having a middleppening, a
pair of flanged segments upon the underside of the last mentioned plate and coinciding with the opening therein; a heat Insulating disc-or plate covering the space enclosed by the segments thus forming a chamber; a re-- fractor containing a'heating element carried within the chamber; means securing the refractor in place; said means consisting of clamping meansunitin together the flanged segments, refractor' and plate or disc of heat insulating material; means housing the subchamber and means for connecting the elements of the respective refractor to a source of electric supply.

last mentioned plate having a middle opening; a pair of flanged segments secured to the underside of the last mentioned plate and coinciding with the opening therein; a heat insulatin disc or plate covering the space enclosediy the segments thus forming a chamber; a refractor'containing a heating element carried within the chamber, the refractor carrying a pair of binding posts and 'pair of flanged segments secured to the un.- derside of the last mentioned plate and coinciding with the o ening therein; a heat in sulatmg disc or p ate covering the space enclosed by the segments thus forming a cham ber; a refractor containin a heating element and carried within the c amber; means see curing the refractor in place; means housing the sub-chamber consisting of an angular plate presenting a flat middle portlon and obli ue end portions; means securing said housing plate in position enclosing the sub-chamber and its electrical connection, one of the oblique ends of said plate having a pair of openings containing bushings of electrical insulating material accommodating certain of the electric leads extending 3.
