UNITED STATES A 1,584, PATENT OFFICE,
max mmxm, or NEW YORK, 1v. Y.
BATHTUB.
Application filed November 28, 1925. Serial No. 72,005.
This invention relates to improvements in bath tubs, and more particularly to small, portable, self-contained'bath tubs, provided with attachments rendering the same especially adaptable for the bathing of children. g
In order that a clearer perception of the present invention may be had, it is to be noted that infants bath tubs are of a size and shape as to render them inconvenient in use when it is desired to have what might be termed a shallow bath or a deep bath, and the present invention is directed more particularly to such bath tubs provided with supporting means covering the bottom which may be raised and lowered either at one end or; both ends to form an inclined or horizontal bath, as desired,
With this idea in mind, one of the objects of the present invention is to provide a small and practical bath tub with an adjustable attachment combined therewith, which may ge (inexpensively manufactured and assem- A further object is to provide a device of the above general character which may be easily and quickly taken apart, and thoroughly cleaned, thus rendering'the device perfectly sanitary. v
A further object of theinvention is to provide adevice of the first above mentioned character, in which the interior walls of the tubs will be free from projections or any projecting parts, which might tend to injure or scratch the infant.
Other objects will be in part obvious. or
' hereinafter pointed out in the following analysis of this invention when taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, illustrating one of various possible embodiments thereof. In these draw ings, wherein similar parts are indicated by corresponding reference characters,-
Figure 1 is an elevation view, partly in section, showing the complete device in operative position;
Figure 2 .is a plan view of the parts shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is" detail perspective view'of one of the parts, and V Figure 4 is a similar view showing a slight modificatiom a While the present invention will be hereinafter described with particular relation to infants" bath tubs, it is, of course, to be understood that without material modifica- .2, is adapted to pass.
tion, various features herein shown and described may be incorporated in other tubs.
Referring now to the drawing in detail and more particularly to Figures 1 and 2,
10 indicates a bath tub which may be of any desired shape, altho it is preferred to construct the tubs inthe outline shown in Figure 2; that is, generally elliptical in form,
but slightly wider at one end than at the The circular ends of the tubs are vided with one or more headed rivets 12 adapted to co-act with key-hole openings 13 in an adjusting device 14 shown in Figure 3. This adjusting device comprises an elongated strip of material bent back upon itself and provides a finger opening 15, which may be grasped to raise and lower the adjusting I means, as desired. The lower part of this member is provided with a part 16 bent at right angles to the main body portion and terminating in a curved eyelet 17 through which the curved rod 18, shown in Figure This rod 18 has a telescopic engagement with a tubular member 20, whereby a certain amount of adjust-.- ability is permitted by sliding the two curved members 13 in and out of this rod. The two rods 20, one at each side, and the two curved members 18, one at each end, provide a frame adapted to co-act with a cradle support 21. This cradlesupport is preferably made of heavy canvas or the like; and is provided at each side with an open tening devices 24:.
In Figure 4, there 1s shown a slight modification; that is, the tub ldhaving recessed portions 11 has the adjusting rivets 12 projecting on the outside andnthe adjusting device 25 with key-hole openings 26 engage the outer surface of the tub while the inner surface 25 of the adjusting member just fits and closes the entrance to this longitudinal channel. In this manner, (the channel is completely closed and the part 25 provides a flush even surface about the interior of the tub. Also, it is to be noted that this 'mem-.
ber 25 is provided with an eyelet 17 for engagin the curved member 18, as above describe The tub is preferably provided with a faucet 2'1 to permit drawing or filling through rubber'tube 28.
It is believed that the operation and method of use of this device will be perfectly clear from the above description. It may be stated, however, that in use, the parts are assembled substantially as shown in Figure 1 and the tub filled to the desired degree with water, as through tube 28 connected with the spigot in a wash bowl, for example. During or after the bath, as desired, the cradle 21 may be moved up an down to any desired depth and securely held in adjustable position. Either one end or both ends may be moved, and should one .end be moved alone, there would bea consequent elongation of the cradle, which would be taken up by the adju'stability of the parts 18 within the tubes 20, together with the natural stretch of the wet .fabric forming the cradle. In this way, the en-' tire bottom of the. tub is covered at all times. B reason of the recessed adjusting means at each end of the tub, there are no projections or corners exposed, thereby preventing inju to the infant. Furthermore, owin tot e simplicityof design and the ease wi h which the device may be taken objects and advantages 1 the recessed portion, and a cradle suspended apart to be cleaned, its will be apparent.
It is thus seen that the present invention contemplates a ractical device well ada ted to accomplis amonrr others, all of t e herein set forth.
sanitary features I claim:
1. In combination with a tub having op-' positely disposed recessed portions, supporting device associated with said recessed portions adjusting devices coo crating therewit and adapted to close tlie open side of the recessed portions, and a cradle suspended between said adjusting devices.
'2. In combination with a tub having op- 'positely. disposed. recessed portions, supporting device associated with said recessed portions, adjusting device cooperating therewith, and adapted to close the open side of between said adjusting devices, said cradle 1 comprising a telescopic frame work construction whereby elongation of the. cradle may be obtained, when desired.
3. In combination with a tub having oppositely disposed recessed portions, supportlng devices associated with said recessed portions, U-shaped adjusting devices having openings on one side cooperating with said supporting devices the opposite side of said adjustin device be to close the open si e of, the recessed portion of the tub, and a cradle suspended from said adjusting device. r
4:. In combination with a tub having oping adapted positely disposed recessed portions, supporting devices associated with said recessed portions, U-shaped adjusting devices having openings on one side cooperating .with said sup orting devices, the opposite pended from said frame work, 'whereb a' certain amount of elongation may take p ace should one of said adjusting dfevices be raised independently of the other.
' ,6. In combination with a tub having oppositely disposed recessed portions, vertical adjusting devices mounted .in said recessed portions each having a portion thereof adapted to close the open side of one recessed ortion, and a cradle supported from said adjusting devices comprising a telescopic frame work and a canvas bottom suspended from said frame work, whereby var certain amount of elongation may take place should one of said adjusting :dlevices be p raised independehtly of the other, said parts being freely detachable one from the other,
whereby they may be easily and quickly disassembled for cleaning purposes.
7. A cradle adapted to be used with a bath tub comprising a telescopic frame sus nded GOGXlSBIlSlVB with the bottom of the tu with which it is used and a canvas bottom.sus-
pended from said framework together with means for adjusting. said cradle at one or both ends relative to the bottom of the tub,
as d ired.
