One of the objects of my invention is to provide a leak-stop to prevent the escape of this liquid from the dash-pot chamber.
A further object of my invention is to provide a leak-proof construction which will not develop excessive friction.
A further object of my invention is to provide a leak-stop, which will be slmple in eflicient' in use, and cheap to manufacture.

leak-stop construction at 20 is provided to prevent the liquid in the dash-pot chamber from escaping around the shaft 16 into the spring chamber.
This leak-stop construction comprises a packing gland 21 threaded into the partition 22 between the dash-pot chamber and the spring chamber, a cupped annular leather packing 22 (Fi 5) surrounding the shaft garcuate wedge members 23 (Fig. 4) engaging the cupped annular packing 22, a coil compression'spring 24 bearing on the wedge members 23 to force them inwardly, and a packing gland nut 25 hearing on the upper end of the compression spring 24. The cupped annular packing 22 comprises a cylindrical portion 26, which is forced snugly against the shaft 16 by the action of the wed members 23, and a tapering frusto-comcal portion 27, which bears against the frusto-conical surface of the lower portion. of the packing gland 21. The cupped leather structed so that the grain will be contiguous to the shaft 16, and also to the inner surface of the packing gland 21. It has been found by test that this grain side of the leather is better, both for stopping the leak and resisting the wear, than the flesh side of the leather As clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4, both the upper and lower faces of the wedge members 23 are taipered. Thus, thewedge members are urge inwardly not only by their tendency to slide down in along the inwardly tapering surface of the packing gland nut, but also by the action of the coil compression spring on the sloping u wedge members. It will be noted that the upper and lower faces of the arcuate wedge members are at quite a steep angle (about 60 degrees) so that there is a strong com? packing washer. is con- I pper surfaces of 'the ponent tending to force the wedge members nwardly to ueeze the packing member 22 sq 16 to prevent leakhere an additional packing is provided at the upper end of the spring 24. The construction at the lower end of the spring is precisely the same as that just described, comprising an annular cup-shaped leather packing member 22, and the arcuate wedge members 23. The packing at the upper end also includes an inverted annular cupped packing member 22*, and a set of wedge members 23, the spring 24 acting upwardly on the upper wedge members 23 and downwardly on the lower wedge members 23. The tapering portion 27 of the upper packing member bears against the tapering inner surface 28 of the packing gland nut 29. The action of the spring 24 on the upper packing is just the same as the lower packing, the wedges 23 being forced inwardly both by the action of the spring 24; and by the reaction of the packing gland nut.
In Fig. 7 is shown a construction in which the spring is dispensed with, the split wedging washer 30 in this form being engaged directly by the tapering inner surface 31 of the packing gland 32.
It is obvious that the pluralityof wedge members shown in Fig. 4 may be used interchangeably with the split wedging washer 30 in the various constructions shown.
\Vhile I have shown but three embodiments of my invention, it is obvious that it may be embodied in other forms'as covered and defined by the appended claims,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. The combination with shaft, of a leak-proof packing construction for said shaft comprising a packing gland having a conical surface surrounding said shaft, and an integral piece of flexible material shaped to provide a cylindrical portion immediately surrounding said shaft, and a conical portion integral with said cylindrical portion and bearing against the conical portion of the packing gland, a plurality of arcuate wedge members located between the cylindrical portion and the conical portion of the flexible piece, and means for forcing said wedge members downwardly whereby the conical surface of the packing gland will force them inwardly to bind the cylindrical flexible material snugly against the shaft.
2. A rod packing construction comprising a rod, a packing gland surrounding said rod having an annular seatmg surface at the bottom and an integral packing member of flexible sheet-like material shaped to a rotatable provide a cylindrical sleeve surrounding said rod, and a circular flange extending outwardly from said cylindrical sleeve and engaging said annular seating surface, and means for forcing said sleeve inwardly against said rod and for forcing said circular flange against its annular seat.
3. A. rod packing construction comprising a rod, a packing gland surrounding said rod having a conical seating surface at the bottom and an integral packing member of flexible sheet-like material shaped to provide a cylindrical sleeve surrounding said rod, and a conical flange extending outwardly from said cylindrical sleeve and engaging said conical seating surface, and arcuate wedge means fitting between said sleeve and flange and movable inwardly and downwardly to force the sleeve snugly about the rod and force the conical flange snugly to its conical seat.
4. A rod packing construction comprising a rod, a packing gland surrounding said rod having a conical seating surface at the bottom and an integral packing member of flexible sheet-like material shaped to provide a cylindrical sleeve surrounding said rod, and a conical flange extending outwardly from said cylindrical sleeve and engaging said conical seating surface, and arcuate wedge means fitting between said sleeve and flange and movable inwardly and downwardly to force the sleeve snugly about the rod and force the conical flange snugly to its conical seat, said arcuate wedge means having conical upper surfaces, and a packing gland nut having a conical'lower surface engaging the upper conical surface of the wedge means to force the wedge means inwardly toward the rod and downwardly toward the conical seating surface.
5. A rod packing construction comprising a rod, a packing gland surrounding said rod, having a conical seating surface at the bottom, a packing sleeve in said gland surrounding said rod, arcuate wed e means in said gland surrounding said pae ing sleeve, a packing gland nut having a conical lower surface, said wedge means having a con ical upper surface cooperating with the conical lower'su'iface of the packin gland nut and having a conical lower sur ace cooperating with the conical seating surface at the bottom of the gland whereby as the nut is moved downwardly, the arcuate wedge means will be forced inwardly.
