\ I. BURTON MINING momma Patented May 4, 1926.
UNITED: STATES I v 1,583,572 PATENT OFFICE.
rsanorm URTON; or PITTSBURGH, rENNs LvANIA. I
. MINING MACHINE.
Application filedrebruary 26y 1925. Serial No. 11,825.
To all whom it may concern: I
citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsbur h, in the county or Allegheny and State of ennsylva-nia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'm a Mining Machine, of, which the following is a specification. v The present invention relates to amining machine, and has for its principal obyect to provide means for digging coal or mineral ore and delivering the'same to a loadlng apparatus.
Another very important -ob ect of the 1nventionv is to provide a mining machlne of this nature wherein the digging apparatus may be extendedflatdifi'erent angles from the carriage and wherein the loading apparatus may also be disposed at different angles to thecarriage and to the digging apparatus.
A still further-very important object of the invent-ion is to provide a mining machine of this nature which possesses a simple structure that is easy to ad ust, one wh1ch 1s efficient and reliable in operation. strong, durable, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appearas the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination andarrangement of. parts as will be hereinafter more fully-described and claimed.
In the drawing v I Figure 1is atop plan; view of the machine embodying the features of my invention,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section therethrough,
Figure 3 is an enlarged d'eta1lQ-sect 1on through one of the blockson the conveylng mechanism in the loader; p I Figure 4: 1s an enlarged transverse sectlon through the digging apparatus, and
Figure 5 is a vertical section taken sub stantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 2;
Beferringto the drawing in de'tail',it will be'seen that 'thecarriage 5 'is mounted on wheels 6 which travel on suitable tracks 7.
A digging apparatusA extends forwardly of the carriage 5 and communicates at itsupper end with av chute B. The bottom end .lation to the carriage.
' portion 9. The lower end of the portion 8 Be' itknown that I, ISADOER BURTON, a
overlaps the inner surface of the portion 9. The portion 9 is provided with an interior flange-l0 and brackets 11 depend from the interior of the portion 8 and support rollers 12 which engage the under surface of the flange 10 for holding the upper portion 8 on the lower portion 9. The upper portion 8 is prevented from sli'ppingdown into the lower portion by the beveled gear member 13 arnanged annularly. and exteriorly thereof, i
and meshingwith a beveled gear 14 operable by a suitable prime mover such as the electric motor 15 carried by the carriage 5. The
lower portion 9 is supported on the carriage.
by'mem-bers 16 and'is provided with an'ex terior annular flange 17-for apurpos'e which will be described later. I
The digging apparatus comprises acon-. veyor structure wherein a forwardly and downwardly slanting trough 17 has its' upper end mounted on bracket 18 rising from the upper portion 8 of the' chute B. This trough 17 is provided with suitable upstanding sides 19. Chains 2O are-trained'through the trough and over. sprockets 21 on shafts 22 and 23, the latter'being at the upper end of the trough and driven by a suitable prime moversuch as the electric motor 24' carried bya bracket 25 supported on the upper por-' tion '8 of the chute. A plurality vof transversely curved shovel blades 26 are mounted across the chains .20 and travel over thebottom of the trough 17 and areadaptedtopick up the coal and cause the same to travel up the chute 17 and to be dumped into'the chute B. By energization of the motor 15 it will be seen that the upper portion A of the chute may be rotated for placing the digging apparatusat different angles 1n re- The loading apparatus C embodies a cona. horizontal ortion at its lower end,an at its upper en in a horizontal portion which may be disposed over a wagon or the like for dumping the coal or the like therein. This troughBO is provided with sides 31 which rise therefrom. On the lower and upper vioa horizontal portions these sides are continued downwardly as at 32 and 33. The forward portions of the sides 33 are connected by ahorizontal bottom 34 which merges into a rearwardly disposed downwardly slanting bottom 35. The sides 32 are connected with a horizontal bottom 36. Shafts 37 and 38 are journaled in the sides 31 and have mounted thereon Sprockets 4O overwhich is trained the chain il which supports a plurality of transversely extending blocks 42 for moving them along the bottom of the trough 30. The shaft 39 is drivenby a suitable motor or other prime mover 4:41nounted on a bracket 45 extending from one side 31. It is preferable to construct these blocks 42 of wood and to cover them with sheet metal as at 46. The upper end of the load ing apparatus is supported by providing the bottom portion 34 with a detent47 ridable in a groove provided in an arcuate rail 48 supported by the screw jack structure 49 on the carriage 5. The lower end of the loading apparatus is supported by providing the sides with overhanging'extensions 57 engageable onthe annular flange 1? provided on the exterior of the lower portion 9 of the chute B. it will thus be seen that the rear end of the loading apparatus may be swung laterally of the carriage; at different angles thereto and at different angles to the digging apparatus. i
It is thought that the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will now be clearly understood Without a more detailed description thereof. It is desired,
'however, to point out that numerous in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. In a mining machine of the class described, a carriage, a chute mounted on the carriage including an upper rotatable portion and a lower stationary portion, means for turning the upper rotatable portion of the chute, a digging and conveying apparatus mounted on the rotatable portion of the chute, and a loading conveying mechanism rotatably mounted on the stationary portion of the chute therebelow.
2. In a mining machine of the class described, a supporting structure, a chute including a lower stationary portion, and an upper rotatable portion, means for holding the two portions of the chute together, means for rotating the upper portion, a combined digging and conveying apparatus mounted on the upper portion, and a combined load er and conveyor mounted for rotation on the lower-portion and extending upwardly and rearwardly therefrom.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
