IMPROVEMENT lN CORN-SHELLERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,357, dated January 5, 1875; application filed February 1, 1873.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES BURKE, of Ottawa, in the county of La balle and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Oorn-Shellers, of which the following is a specification My invention consists in the combination, with a corn-shellcr, of a protector, the object of which is to prevent ears of unshelled corn from being thrown upon the sieve, and from thence carried into the heap of chaff, where they would be lost, unless sorted out again with extra labor. The object of said protector is also to protect the sieve from the destroyin g effect of unshelled ears of corn, which would, through the motion of the sieve, rub on the wire meshes thereof, and wear them out unnecessarily. Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.

A is the body of the corn-sheller, as usually constructed. B is the shaft end of the revolving cylinder, with a pulley fitted thereon.

From this pulley a belt, G, passes onto another pulley, D, on shaft E. This shaftE has at the other end also a pulley, F, attached, from which a belt, G, passes onto the pulley H, placed on the shaft end of the lower roller of the cob-elevator I. The elevator and carrier I is constructed in the ordinary mannerthat is, with two end rollers, J and K, and some intermediate rollers when the elevator is of great length. Over these rollers passes the apron L, furnished with small slats r 7' r r, to prevent the cobs from rolling down. Two legs or braces, M M, serve to hold up the elevator I in the proper position. When commencing to shell corn the elevator I is used as a carrier only, being let down so as to carry off the cobs horizontally; then, when the heap grows larger, the elevator is gradually raised by means of the legs or braces M M, so that the head of the elevator is kept above theheap of cobs. The protector N consists of a boxshaped attachment, made of wood or sheet metal, and open at one end, which is the end opposite to the elevator I. hen shoveling ears of corn intothe sheller, any accidentally drop outside the hopper, as will often happen, this attachment will catch such stray ears and retain them, and when finally enough has accumulated to make it worth while, the attendant can, with his shovel or with his hands,

take them out and throw them back upon the heap.

What I claim as my invention is- The attachment to and combination with a oorn-sheller of a protector, N, substantially as and for the purposes described.
