` i GREASE GUN. I
Application filed September 4, 1920. Serial No, 408,222.
To ,ZZ/Luzomit may concern."
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. DEMING, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Salem, inthe county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, liave'invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Grease Giiiis, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.l
This-invention relates to'grease guns and has forits objects a, provision of means for effectively forcing an entire charge o-f material out of a container; together with 'a construction of a. cooperating head and spout, which will be adapted to draw a chargeof material into the container with pout forming an excessive air pocket therein.
The above and other objects will be set forth in the followingV descriptionwhich re' lates to the drawings, and the essential characteristics thereof are set forth in the claims.
The drawings showA the invention embodied in a device suitable for use as a grease adaptedto hold a charge ofL grease or heavy,
oil, one end of which is enclosed by a cap ll,
gun ,"Fig. l is an elevation of such grease gun; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thru the center thereof; Fig. v3 is a transverse sec'- tion taken on the lines 3 3 in Fig. 2; Fig. t
is an enlarged fragmentary section of theV plunger head and spout; Fig. 5 is an elevation of the expander ring.
Designatingthe parts by the use of refr erence characters, 'l0 represents a cylinder,
the other end being open thru the spout 12. A reciprocating vpiston 13' is adapted to move withinthe container l0 by means' of force exerted on the lhan-Idle 14. This general arrangement is such as is customarily used in devices of this character, and the novel features ofmy invention are embodied in the construction of the spout l2, together with the cooperating piston head l5.'
The cylinder 10 is preferably threaded at lone end to receive the vusual cap ll, and at the other end to receive the spout 12. y The cylinder may be constructed of any hollow tubing suitable as a container for grease, the interior portion thereof being preferably smooth to provide for a close fit between the cylinder and the piston which is adapted to reciprocate therein. lThe cap l1 is preferably so constructed that it may be readily removed to facilitate the removal ofthe plunger and head.
My reciprocating piston, which is adaptedi,
to b'e moved within the cylinder and'is Vse- PATENT f WILLIAM I.. DEMING, or SALEM, oIIIo, AssIeNoE 'To'.frHE DEMING COMPANY,- or
cured to the eiid of the rod 1:3, comprises a member having a shaped tip 20, which merges into a'cyli'nsubstantially conical dii'c'al portion 2l, and which may be secured' to the endV of the rod by a threaded engagement therewith 0r by any suitable means.` A I have shown a piston head having a centrally positioned cylinder 22 with a hollow space between the 'center and the walls of the head. l
This space has been provided not only'to lessen the weight of thev head but valsotol afford effective supporting. surface againstthev outer portion of the packing c u'p 25, shownA as abutting the end of the cylindrical portion 2l and closely embraced by the rwalls of the `cylinder 10.
A 'packing' cup 27, similar to` the cup125f but .separated therefrom bythe spacing yplate 26 is rigidly held against the head by the washer 28 and the expander ring 29. The
expander ring comprises a cup-shaped mein'- ber preferably stamped from a flat disk `and .having an annular bowed portion 40,' to'- gether' withra plurality ofjkerfs ll extending y from the bowed portion to the periphery of the disk. l The vbottoni portion 42being` flat serves as a washer to hold the cup 27aga-inst the head, whilev the periphery serves to forcel the packing cup against the wallsiof the cylinder, thereby effecting an air-tight joint and insuring a charge of grease that is freefrom' entrapped l air. Y cylindricalzportion 21is preferably such that the thickness of the packing cup2`5A mayj lie betweenA the head and thek cylindrical wall.
The tip 30 ofthe head is preferablyA rounded so as to partially center the head when it reaches the opening in the spout.
To 'carry out the object above named of facilitating the forcing of the entire contents from the grease gun, I have constructed the spout ofthe grease gun in the form of a combined funnel and spout, the funnel pory100 i tion comprising the end wall of the cylinder 10, whereby the complementary conical plunger may function toforce the oil or grease from the cylinder.. As shown in the drawings, 32 is this conical or funnel section 105 mentioned merging into the cylinder 'portion l31, threaded on the cylinder 10 and prefer- The outside diameter of the ably integral with the spout or tip 33,which is reinforced by a slight enlargement indicated at 35 at the extreme end. The interior 110 part of the conical section 32 is substantially complementary to the exterior portion 20 of the head 15, and the apex of the cone is positioned on a line with the axis of the head. AThe tip 33, however, is shown as positioned obliquely to the axis of the head to enable an operator to lubricate bearings that would be inaccessible with the straight tip. The enlarged head 85at the tip may facilitate the attachment of a hose or tube.
In operation the tip 33 is inserted within a grease container while an operator forces the handle lll inwardly until the head 15 abuts the spout l2. As the handle is drawn outwardly the charge of grease or other material is drawn into the container 10 and practically fills the space therein, the operator then removes the pump from the container whereupon it is ready for use.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a device which is adapted toydraw in and hold a charge of grease or heavy oil without entrapping air; that I have provided a mechanism which is capable of discharging all of the grease held within the container thereby eliminating the possibility of corners being clogged with grease and thus necessitating cleaning. It will also-be apparent that I have provided such a device in a form which is simple, efficient and capable of being cheaply manufactured.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a device of the character described the combination of a cylindrical container, a hollow conical head mounted at one end thereof, a discharge spout leading from the end of the head, a piston rod having the end within t-he cylinder threaded, a hollow conical piston head having a central boss, said boss having a threaded opening in engagement with the piston rod and the end of said boss being in the same plane with the base of the piston head skirt, a pair of oppositely facing packing cups, a washer disposed intermediate the cups, each of said n cups and said washer having a central opening through which said piston rod extends, the openings in the cup adjacent the piston head being smaller than the diameter of the boss and an abutment on the piston rod beyond theother cup, whereby the piston head acts as a nut having engagement with the adjacent cup in a central region and also in an annular region adjacent the flange.
2. In a device of the character described the combination of a cylindrical container, a hollow conical head mounted at one end thereof, a discharge spout leading from the end of the head, a piston rod having the end within the cylinder threaded, a hollow piston head having a portion thereof cylindrical in shape and having another portion thereof conical in shape, the cylindrical portion merging with the conical portion, and said piston head having a central boss, said boss having a threaded opening in engagement with the piston rod and the end of said boss being in the same plane with the' base, the
outermost portion of said piston head, the
outer surface of the piston head from the base to the apex of the cone being smooth throughout, a pair of oppositely facing packing cups, a washer disposed intermediate the cups, each of said cups and said washer having a central opening through which said piston rod extends, the vopenings in the cup and washer being smaller than the thickness of the boss whereby the cups are supported near the central and peripheral portions by the piston head, a follower in abutting engagement with the innermost packing cup, and a single nut threaded on the piston rod, said nutfunctioning as an abutment for the follower, packing cups and piston as a unit, the cylindrical portion of said piston head being spaced inwardly from one of said packing cups, whereby the material being compressed may urge the packing cup against the wall of the container.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aiix my signature.
VILLIAM L. DEMING.
